    2. D. M. Burke
    3. Help! In the Tazewell County Library is a master's thesis entitled: Castle's Woods: "Frontier Virginia Settlement" by James W. Hagy, 1966 in which a reference to William Robinson is made. Hagy mentions that this Robinson took an indentured servant, Luke Burk. Also mentioned is a James Burks whose record is from Capt. William Russell's Company of Militia for the first pay period during Dunmore's War. My interests are: 1) Is this William Robinson the father of Anna Robinson who ca 1803 married a James Burk? Does any one know who the children of William Robinson are? 2) The husband of Anna (Robinson) Burk could be a son of a) Luke or b) James Burks mentioned in Dunmore's War above. The two James could not be the same person as the husband of Anna was born 1774. Anna was born 1789. 3) Is the above William Robinson related to the George Robinson that brought a company of settlers from New Castle, DE. to Botetourt County, Va. ? David. M. 3. Edgar, In the Lee County Cemetery Book that came out I found a Sallie Thomas, hopefully Sallie Travis Smith Thomas, married to Edward McDonald Smith (Smyth) who died 1864. Anyway this Sallie Thomas is buried in the Tritt-Gilbert Cemetery, directions - from Woodway, go east on Sr 642 for 2 miles, left on land of 0.2 mile. On original Samuel Tritt, Sr. farm. Other info I have is that Sallie (Sarah) Thomas died 12-26-1893 in Rocky Station. If someone died at Rocky Station, would the Tritt-Gilbert Cemetery be nearby?? Robert Killett

    3. Thanks for your interest and responses to my "Certificate in Right of Settlement" question. For those interested, I received the following information which provides a logical explanation for the need to prove ownership: "In 1777, the Continental Congress urged all States to seize and dispose of land owned by Loyalists and adherents to English King. All States had followed this advice by 1782, and were in the real estate business." (Kirkham) Kirkham, E. 3. On the fence of a Hortenstine Cemetery in Rich Valley, Wash. Co. is a bronze plaque with the following: "Jacob Hortenstine came from Germany to America about 1762. Prior to the Revolutionary War he lived in Buck's County [PA] and other sections of Eastern Pennsylvania. Lived in Rockingham County, Va. 1780- 81. Moved to Washington County, Va. in 1782. He and Paulser Rouse took up public land on South Fork of Holston River about 25 miles from here in 1781. Later he took up additional land there in 1793 purchased and moved to this farm in 1796. Farm has since continued in possession of family. He and wife are buried about 1775 ft. west of here in former Lutheran Church Cemetery all trace of which is now gone. "Jacob Hortenstine and Mary Catherine Widner married about 1769. Had about 13 children 8 of whom lived to maturity. Henry 7-7- 1800 8-27-1880 their youngest son married Theodosia Ellingron moved to Moultree Co., IL. 1857 died there leaving many descendants. Susan, youngest daughter married John Barker lived at Spring Creek about 6 miles S.E. of here. Left Descendants. " The cemetery contains a single grave with a surname other than Hortenstine, and that is that of Sally Fleenor. I thought it might help poor soul. <g>

    1. (Fwd) SW VA Historical Maps Inventory
    2. Edgar A. Howard
    3. ------- Forwarded Message Follows ------- From: Self <Single-user mode> To: SW_VA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: SW VA Historical Maps Inventory Copies to: Fincastle Forum Post Date sent: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 13:18:37 -0500 Here is an inventory of the maps that I have. I don't have any to sale at this time but I could make copies if there is a demand. They are all very readable and nearly all are printed text. I find them very helpful in understand the settlement of SW VA, KY, NC, etc. and in helping to find the major mts, streams, towns, and early settlers. The are a collection of maps that I have copied from libraries, books and other sources. They are NOT copyrighted so we can copy them. Sizes are estimates of full map. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED CLICK REPLY, AND LET ME KNOW WHICH ONES. I'M _NOT_ TAKING ORDERS NOW, BUT WILL GET BACK TO YOU THIS WEEK IF THERE IS SUFFICIENT INTEREST. They are large so they are not cheap to copy. The best part about them is that the mts., streams, churches, mills, communities, mines, etc. often have SURNAMES in them. Please don't ask me to search each map for a NAME you are looking are. YOU WILL GET A NASTY REPLY!! 1) Historical Map of Washington Co., VA 36" x 24" I created this map from 4 or more sources. Primarily from the 1880 map from the Hist. Soc. of Wash. Co. I also used several history books, some local historians, USGS topo maps, and the co. road map. It contains roads, mts., streams, churches, cemeteries, mills, forts, settlements, etc. It covers as far north as Copper Creek. This one has lots of details because I put them there. One can use this map to add their own data such as where their ancestor's farms were. You can build your own genealogical map of Wash. Co., VA 36" x 30" $12. 30" x 18" $ 8 incl. postage 2) Comtempory Frontier Settlements 1740 - 1760 30" Copy of a library map of VA settlements. Mostly rivers and streams like a geological map . Some of the earliest settlements are show. Not detailed. It covers the NC border to the Ohio river; and from Richmond to the Cumberland Gap. It is a great outline of SW VA if you wanted to create your own maps. It would be ease to print out some names and cut n' paste them to this map. 30" x 24" $5 3) Southwestern VA map 1880 Commercial & Industrial map. >From the New River to the Gap. Rivers & streams, mines, towns, roads, RR, mts., valleys, etc. A few surnames. 24" x 18" $7 4) Southwestern VA Minerial Resources & RR 1883 - Boyd C.E. w/ an insert of major RR routes of S.E. U.S. Rivers & streams, mines, towns, roads, RR, mts., valleys, etc. A few surnames. 36" x 30" $8 5) NEW RIVER & CRIPPLE CREEK area map. 1887 Covers mostly the Wytheville area. There are some SURNAMES and the best details of Wythe Co. that I have seen. I have listed some of the surnames in the past. Some area names common in Washington & Scott Co. 30" x 24" $6 6) Montgomery Co. Historical Map 30" x 24" Settlements from 1750 - 1865 . Very detailed w/ rivers, streams, roads, SURNAMES, historical notes and stories, First officers, very attractive layout. If you have ancestors from Mont. Co. this map will be very helpful. 36" x 24" $8 7) Botetourt Co. Historical Map 30" x 24" Just the present Co. area Settlements from 1750 - 1865 . Very detailed w/ rivers, streams, roads, SURNAMES, historical notes and stories, First officers, very attractive layout. If you have ancestors from Botet. Co. this map will be very helpful. There are SURNAMES common to SW VA. 30" x 24" $8 8) Pulaski Co. Historical map 30" x 24" Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. 9) Roanoke Co. Historical map 30" x 24" Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. 10) Fincastle Co. 1772 - 1776 Broad area map of frontier America Covers from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River. Gives the boundary of the original Fincastle and Botetourt Co. Shows major rivers and future states cut from Botetourt Co. which ran to the Miss. & Ohio River. Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. Very general but attractive historical reference. 24" x 18" $5 11) SCOTT CO. Historical *** This one is not complete but if there is enough interest I can complete it and make copies. I have previously posted many of the names and locations that would be on it. Let me know. 30" x 24" About $8 I'm happy to do this if it is not a big hassle. This is not a business for me and I don't have time to give on an on going basis. This will be a one time thing. I DO find them very helpful and they give much more meaning to my research. -eddie NH

    3. If you drew an arc from Big Stone Gap to Pennington Gap on the south east side, Wallen Ridge would start about half way along that arc. Then, it continues at about the same angle as the Virginia/Kentucky border down to the Tennessee border. ---------- > From: Edgar A.
