I have the book "The Life of Daniel Boone" by Lyman Draper, LL.D, edited by Ted Franklin Belue. It is a marvelous book, but Draper's story itself is really good reading. He died in 1891, but wrote many manuscripts that are read by researchers and historians. This book came out last year. I was at a Boone Reunion last June in KY adn met Ted Belue. He has written other books: "The long Hunt: Death of the Buffalo East of the Mississippi" and "A Sketch in the Life and Character of Daniel Boone". Members, SEVERAL HAVE ASK THAT I REPOST THIS. For those who were interested in the map(s), here are the simple instructions. PLEASE READ AND SAVE!!! The Scott Co. & Washington Co. map are ready. I'm very happy with the data I found for Scott Co. It is much more than I had hoped for. ALL THE MAPS AND HOW TO ORDER ARE SHOWN BELOW. In two weeks I start packing for my move back to SW VA so I won't be able to mail out maps after Feb 24. 1. Send an order letter via snail mail to me at the address in #2. The letter must contain cash or a check for the amount. Price includes postage. The letter must contain a list of the maps ordered, your email address as used in the SW_VA List. Also include your mailing address. 2. Send the order letter to: Edgar A. Howard P.O. 64 Bennington, NH 03442 3. ALL ORDERS must be received by Feb. 19th. No exceptions. I can send a 'receipt of order' note if you request. Orders received after Feb 19 will be returned or trashed. All maps will be mailed out no later than Feb. 23d via first class mail if checks have cleared. 4. You don't need to email me anything right now. Here is an inventory of the maps that I have. They are all very readable and nearly all are printed text. They contain towns, cemeteries, mills, forts, gaps, churches, rivers, mtns, creeks, and schools. I find them very helpful in understand the settlement of SW VA, KY, NC, etc. because most places, etc contain surnames. The are a collection of maps that I have copied from libraries, books and other sources. They are NOT copyrighted so we can copy them. Sizes are estimates of full map. They are large so they are not cheap to copy. The best part about them is that the mts., streams, churches, mills, communities, mines, etc. often have SURNAMES in them. Please don't ask me to search each map for a NAME you are looking are. ************** THESE ARE THE MAPS ****************** 1) Historical Map of Washington Co., VA 36" x 24" I created this map from 4 or more sources. Primarily from the 1880 map from the Hist. Soc. of Wash. Co. I also used several history books, some local historians, USGS topo maps, and the co. road map. It contains roads, mts., streams, churches, cemeteries, mills, forts, settlements, etc. It covers as far north as Copper Creek. This one has lots of details because I put them there. One can use this map to add their own data such as where their ancestor's farms were. You can build your own genealogical map of Wash. Co., VA 36" x 30" $12. 30" x 18" $ 8 incl. postage 2) Comtempory Frontier Settlements 1740 - 1760 30" Copy of a library map of VA settlements. Mostly rivers and streams like a geological map . Some of the earliest settlements are show. Not detailed. It covers the NC border to the Ohio river; and from Richmond to the Cumberland Gap. It is a great outline of SW VA if you wanted to create your own maps. It would be ease to print out some names and cut n' paste them to this map. 30" x 24" $5 3) Southwestern VA map 1880 Commercial & Industrial map. >From the New River to the Gap. Rivers & streams, mines, towns, roads, RR, mts., valleys, etc. A few surnames. 24" x 18" $7 4) Southwestern VA Minerial Resources & RR 1883 - Boyd C.E. w/ an insert of major RR routes of S.E. U.S. Rivers & streams, mines, towns, roads, RR, mts., valleys, etc. A few surnames. 36" x 30" $8 5) NEW RIVER & CRIPPLE CREEK area map. 1887 Covers mostly the Wytheville area. There are some SURNAMES and the best details of Wythe Co. that I have seen. I have listed some of the surnames in the past. Some area names common in Washington & Scott Co. 30" x 24" $6 6) Montgomery Co. Historical Map 30" x 24" Settlements from 1750 - 1865 . Very detailed w/ rivers, streams, roads, SURNAMES, historical notes and stories, First officers, very attractive layout. If you have ancestors from Mont. Co. this map will be very helpful. 36" x 24" $8 7) Botetourt Co. Historical Map 30" x 24" Just the present Co. area Settlements from 1750 - 1865 . Very detailed w/ rivers, streams, roads, SURNAMES, historical notes and stories, First officers, very attractive layout. If you have ancestors from Botet. Co. this map will be very helpful. There are SURNAMES common to SW VA. 30" x 24" $8 8) Pulaski Co. Historical map 30" x 24" Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. 9) Roanoke Co. Historical map 30" x 24" Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. 10) Fincastle Co. 1772 - 1776 Broad area map of frontier America Covers from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River. Gives the boundary of the original Fincastle and Botetourt Co. Shows major rivers and future states cut from Botetourt Co. which ran to the Miss. & Ohio River. Same type of the two co. maps # 6) & 7) above. Very general but attractive historical reference. 24" x 18" $5 11) SCOTT CO. Historical *** This one is complete and has many, many surnames on it. 30" x 24" About $8 I'm happy to do this if it is not a big hassle. This is not a business for me and I don't have time to give on an on going basis. This will be a one time thing. I DO find them very helpful and they give much more meaning to my research. -eddie NH

So Ole Scratch is working against us?!!! Some one should video all the stones in that cemetery. >From the BHC: One or more vandals caused extensive damage to a Washington County, Va., church cemetery and two outbuildings early Sunday morning, authorities said. More than a dozen tombstones were knocked over and smashed in the cemetery next to Fleenor's Memorial Church, where storage buildings were destroyed and picnic tables were torn apart. Damage estimates were incomplete, although investigators said Monday that the final figure would be "several thousand dollars." Sheriff's investigators said items painted with pentagrams and other symbols associated with devil worship and witchcraft were found in a car allegedly used in the incident. Investigators said the impounded vehicle was used to crash the cemetery gates and drive over tombstones, some of which are more than 100 years old. Felony warrants were issued Monday for 19-year-old Christopher Rash, a Bristol Virginia man who was discharged Monday from the Bristol Regional Medical Center. Sheriff Kenneth Hayter said Rash, 356 Magnolia St., was hospitalized after consuming an unknown quantity of alcohol and prescription drugs the night of the alleged incident. A hospital spokesman could not say whether Rash was released to another facility. The sheriff said the suspect was transferred to a substance-abuse facility. Rash is charged with two felony counts of destroying private property and tombstones, the sheriff said. He also faces a misdemeanor trespassing charge. The warrants will be served when Rash is released from the detoxification center, Hayter said. Copies of the warrants have been delivered to county prosecutors, said Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Jeff Coale. The felony charges may be upgraded to hate crimes under federal law, the sheriff said. Investigators have not determined why this particular church was vandalized, although they have ruled out racism as a motive. Fleenor Memorial Church does not have a black congregation. A number of black churches across the South have been burned in recent years. The Ford automobile that was allegedly used to cause most of the damage was seized in Bristol and taken to the sheriff's office, investigators said. More than a dozen empty bottles of vodka and whiskey were also found in the car, Capt. Chuck Bishop said. The vehicle is not registered to the suspect, Bishop added, saying investigators are still trying to determine if more than one person was involved. "Why would anyone do a thing like this?" the sheriff asked Monday afternoon while surveying the damage. Gates to the cemetery were ripped from the hinges and buckled inward in a heap of twisted metal. The tombstone of Isaac B. Fleenor, who was 80 years old when he died in 1879, was knocked from its base and cracked into three pieces. Monuments and other memorials were uprooted from the earth and a car had torn away the grass over dozens of graves, leaving muddy tire tracks. A vehicle had obviously been crashed into a wooden storage shed and picnic tables, where shattered headlight glass was strewn along the ground. The driver also tried to crash into the front doors of the church, the sheriff said, but was unable to make it up the six cement steps. The church interior was not damaged. Hayter said his office investigates infrequent reports of cemetery vandalism, typically around Halloween, "but nothing like this." Sunday services at the non-denominational church were held at the usual time, said Paschal Stewart, a church trustee. Stewart said he had contacted an insurance company, but did not know whether the cemetery damage would be covered. He said the congregation "is torn all to pieces" over the vandalism. "I don't know what we're going to do." The incident was reported to the sheriff's office by the church groundskeeper around 12:20 a.m. Sunday, Hayter said. The groundskeeper lives near the church, the sheriff said, and called 911 after hearing a disturbance on the property.

I just ran across this on a site on Palatine Emigrants... Since so many of us are descendants of these very emigrants, it would be worth posting. I hope you all will agree and even further appreciate the perils of our ancestors!! Diana Kinzer Heath ----- The State of the Poor Palatines As Humbly Represented By Themselves Upon Their First Arrival In This Kingdom, About June, 1709 (from London, England) "We the poor distressed Palatines, whose utter Ruin was occasioned by the merciless Cruelty of a Blood Enemy, the French, whose prevailing Power some years past, like a Torrent rushed into our Country, and overwhelmed us at once; and being not content with Money and Food necessary for their Occasions, not only disspossest us of all Support but inhumanely burnt our House to the ground, where being deprived of all Shelter, we were turned into open Fields, and there drove with our Families, to seek what Shelter we could find, being obliged to make the cold Earth our Lodgings, and the Clouds our Covering. In this deplorable condition we made our Humble Supplications and Cries to Almighty God, who has promised to relieve them that put their Trust in him, whose Goodness we have largely Experienced, in disposing the Hearts of Pious Princes to a Christian Compassion and Charity towards us in this miserable condition, who by their Royal Bounties and large Donations, and the exemplary Kindness of well-disposed Nobility, Gentry, and Others. We and our poor Children have been preserved from Perishing; specially since our Arrival into this happy Kingdom of GREAT BRITAIN. While not only like the Land of Canaan, abounds with all things necessary for human Life, but also with a Religious People, who as freely give to the Distressed for Christ's sake, as it was given to them by the Almighty Donor of all they enjoy. Blessed Land and Happy People! Governed by the Nursing Mother of Europe, and the Best of Queens! Whose unbounded Mercy and Charity has received us despicable Strangers from afar off into Her own Dominions, where we have found a Suppy of all things Necessary for our present Subsistence; for which we bless and praise Almighty God, the Queen's most Excellent Majesty and all Her good subjects, from the Highest Degree to those of the meanest Capacity; and do sincerely and faithfully promise to all our utmost Powers, for the future, to render ourselves Thankful to God, and Serviceable to Her Majesty, and all her Good Subjects, in what way soever her goodness is pleased to dispose of Us: and in the mean time be constant in our Prayers, that God would return the Charity of well disposed People a thousand fold into their own Bosoms, which is all the Requittal that can present be made by us poor distressed Protestants." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Greetings: I have the newspaper clippings (2) of my grandfathers obit. Which I found tucked away in an old family Bible. They are very fragile and yellowed, there are no headings or date of the paper or clipping, I have searched both sides of the clipping and can not tell. I will type it out for you, it reads: # 1 -Trammel, Va., April 14. - Teamon Bowman, Dickenson County pioneer, and probably the oldest man in Southwest Virginia, died at his home at DeBusk postoffice, on Lick Creek, five miles north of here, at 9 A.M. Thursday, April 8th. Born near Alum Wells, Washington County, in 1822, he was ninety-three years of age at the time of his death. His father, Uriah Bowman, came from North Carolina in the early years of the neneteeth century and settled near Alum Wells, where he readed his family; of this family only one now survives, Mrs. Tryphena Agnor, of Hilton Station. #2 - Trammel Viginia. Mrs Emm Austin, Mrs. Francis Miller, Mrs. Jane Silcox, Mrs. Ellen Silcox and Mr. Charles Bowman were called to DeBusk, on account of the serious illness, and subsequent death of their aged fater, Dr. Teamon Bowman. Dr. Bowman, who was undoubtedly, Dickenson County's oldest citizen, was ninety-three years of age, and settled on the farm where he died, some forty-five years ago. Granville White, Foy McMillian, Jessee McMillaan, O. T. Austin and many others from Trammel attended the burial of Dr. Teamon Bowman, on Bear Ridge, Saturday. (typo errors left in as written) I have FTM 5.0, and have had absolutely no luck with the Bowman line. One family member thinks Teamon's wife was named Mary ?. My grandmother Emmaline Bowman was born April 21, 1881 in Washington Co., Va. d. 11-30-1964. She married Nathan Ballard Austin 12-08-1898 at Nora, Dickenson, Co., Va. I have had much better luck with the Austin line. If anyone has any suggestions, or if we can share info., please let me know. Dear List, Is any one searching HARRIS. I would like information about Lysander b. 1829, Lilburn b.1819, and wife Phebe Sanders (b. 1821) HARRIS (they had 10 children in all), Mary HARRIS b. 1828, Henry and Lucinda Chapman HARRIS both b. 1810 and perhaps most important Thomas (b. 1788) and wife Mary b. 1798. Henry was on the 1838 Tax list for Washington and all the above were on the 1850 Census. I am hoping that they may be related to my Nathaniel Brick Wall Harris (m. to Martha Byars). The Byars and other relatives of the two with other surnames seem to be there at the same time then perhaps the other HARRIS family migrated there also. My HARRIS and BYARS migrated from Louisa about the 1790 to 1810 time frame. Any insight will be appreciated. I have a great deal of the information about the descendants of Nathaniel and details of his life such as pension and will. If any one is interested I can provide as much as I have.
