    3. Pat, I have heard two versions of the death of Boones' son and didn't mention it because I didn't want to start an argument about it! Also, I was concerned about the length of my post to the list.. The version I tend to believe is in "Daniel Boone" by Bakeless..In it he says Boone got a lot of supplies from William Russell on the Clinch river but after reaching the Powell Valley, Boone sent his son and another man back to Russells to get some more things they might need..Russell sent his son and a Negro with them as they went back to Boones party..They got within three miles of Boones camp and decided to stop and camp for the night..They were attacked by Indians and all were killed except the Negro who hid.. When his son and the Negro didn't return, William Russell set out to see if they were alright and he found them dead..Daniel Boone had also setout looking for them and came upon them a bit later..He buried his son and went back to the party in Powell Valley. That's when they decided against proceeding on to Ky at that time... G. Lee Hearl...

    2. Charles E. Starnes
    3. Edward Boggs raises a good question. The time frame is probably crucial to the answer. As for genealogy, my time frame for this question is roughly 1760-1800. I can't seem to make the crucial family links because my line shows up with varied surname spelling (STARN, STERN, STARNS, STERNS, STARNES) in various counties in the area connecting VA, TN, KY, NC, and SC. This is further complicated by the shifting names of locales as new states and counties were being formed. In part, the moving about in this period may be explained by a combination of people seeking to safety in the conflicts with Native Indians and seeking new opportunities as new settlement areas opened up or they received land grants. In any case, it really makes tracing a family line difficult sometimes. Indeed, I just yesterday ran into a new twist in my efforts to find the parents of my ggg-gf John STARNES. He has been variously reported by descendants (without documentation) as born in VA, NC, and SC. However, I just checked the 1860 Mortality Census for Hawkins Co., TN, where he died on Dec. 16, 1859, and found that it lists him as born in KY. Now I have to shift gears and start looking in KY for his parents! But, since it lists him as born in 1776, KY was not yet a state at that time. It was, in fact, still a part of VA. So I can't stop looking in VA either! Of course, since this info was from the Mortality Census it wasn't he who gave the information! So, I can't yet be sure that KY is the correct place of birth! You are so right E.G.! Charles Ed Starnes Edward Boggs wrote: > > Why is it I seem to find so many families such as mine seemed to have > moved back and forth between counties in Va. and Ky. 3. Regarding people moving back and forth between Va. and Ky: During the period 1770 to 1800 many people went or started to Kentucky and returned to safer areas because of the Indian attacks on cabins and forts. Daniel Boone started with a party from N.C. and Va. in 1773 hoping to settle in Kentucky but they were attacked in Powell Valley and turned back..They were driving cattle and the Indians scattered them and killed several in the party..Many of them not only returned to Va., but went back across the Blue Ridge Mountain to N.C.. Later, Harrod and some others established settlements in Ky. but all of them were harassed by Indians and many returned to Va.. Boone and his axmen cleared a path and Henderson led a group through Cumberland Gap in 1775 to settle in Ky and as they were going they met many people who had seen enough and were returning to Va. Benjamin Logan also established a fort and took settlers to Ky in 1775..All of the Forts were attacked causing the fainthearted to pack up and leave but some who were in charge of the Forts managed to keep their parties together.. Boones fort had to be abandoned at times because they did not have enough men and ammunition to defend it...Once when Boone took a group of men to the salt springs to make salt in the winter, he managed to get all of them captured by the Indians, including himself..When he returned about six months later, his wife had given up and thinking he had been killed, took her children and returned to N.C...No doubt, there were others who returned with her..Reuben Herrall and Rebecca, his wife and several of their children left the New river area of Montgomery County, Va and went to Ky but Reuben and Rebecca returned to Washington County, Va. where he died, but Rebcca went back to Ky and died there...Some of their children and decendents moved on to Arkansas..I don't know why Reuben returned to Va., it wasn't because he was fainthearted, he was known as an Indian fighter and was in the Battle of Kings Mountain.. 3. I remember my mother telling me this: She said years ago one of our neighbors, Oscar Davis, was a lay preacher and his wife had just died. First thing you know, Oscar had him a new girlfriend. One day a church deacon approached him and said, "Preacher, don't you think it's a little soon for you to be courtin? Your wife just died two months ago." Oscar replied, "Well, the way I see it--Ethel's as dead as she'll ever be!" Pat

    3. This one has been passed around our family for more years than I care to remember.... It's a true story (names have been ommitted).. There once was an old country gentleman who had to make his first trip to the hospital... well the time finally came when the nurse entered the room and said "Well, Mr. ________ it's now time for me to give you your bath." Now the old gentleman could see he was in a bit of a spot here so he said to the nurse," Well, I'll tell you what, you can wash down as far as possible, and you can wash up as far as possible, but I'll wash "Ole Possible"...<g> <g> Thought you might get a little giggle and a smile from this one... 2. At least a part of the reason that families moved back and forth between VA and KY, may have been that they were Melungeons. I am pasting a copy of the common Melungeon surnames to this post. If any one of your families is in this list, I will be glad to send via e-mail and FREE, information on the Melungeons, including; background, physical characteristics, some URLs, mailing lists, and some medical information on inherited illnesses which descendants need to know about.
