Hi Eddie, I checked it out and I think it's an awesome idea...there should be some marvelous information that will come out...we've already seen the effects that just one topic can bring... Thanx for the effort and time Eddie... Pam Researching the following surnames: BURKE, CARTER, PATRICK, WINGO, McGRADY, WIMBERLEY, WITT/WHITT, HENSLEY, ROBERTSON.
Eddie, You sure have a lot of territory to cover but it sounds good. In reading the list, I didn't see "Schools" as one of the subjects. Did I overlook it?

This is due to the fact the area was so remote it didn't become a "melting pot" of customs, language and music until the 1900s. Has anyone read the series of books "Foxfire"...we have books one, two and three. I don't know if there were more or not. The books are full of drawings, photos, stories and events as told by the mountain people to high school students of Eliot Wigginton. The books are "dedicated to the people of these mountains in hope that, through it, some portion of their wisdom, ingenuity and individuality will remain long after them to touch us all"
RE: Creeks of Wash. Co. land Survey book 3/24/99 3:37:42 PM Eastern Standard Time from Edgar A. Howard, he wrote: > These are the CREEKS mentioned in the Wash. Co. land grant Survey book. > *means I don't know where it is. The following are possible locations for some of the CREEKS he listed. I say possible due to the misspellings often found in old documents. 1) *Cabbin Creek, waters of the north fork of Holstein A Cabin Creek starts abt. 1 mile east of Greendale, Scott Co., and flows north following State Rd. 684 to North Fork of Holston River. 2) *Martins Creek, north branch of Powells A Martin Creek starts at Rose Hill, which is located on US 58 in Lee Co., and flows south into the Powell River just over the TN state line. 3) *Shavers Creek on Powell river A Shafer Creek in Lee Co. follows State Rd. 644 then State Rd. 640 to Collier Mill on the Powell River. 4) *Trading Creek in Powells Valley In Lee Co, near the KY state line and about halfway between Hubbard Springs and Hockett, a Trading Creek on State Rd. 656 merges with Sugar Run Creek and becomes Dry Run Creek that flows to Powell River. 5) *Carlocks Creek Middle Fork A Carlock Creek starts abt. 4 miles west of Seven Mile Ford, Smythe [today] Co. and follows State Rd. 617 and 637 to the Middle Fork of the Holston River at Chilhowie, Smythe Co. 6) *Caney Creek In Lee Co. there is a Cane Creek from Ben Hur to Pennington Gap on Alt. US 58. 7) *Yellow Creek In the southwestern part of Lee Co., near the TN border, there is a Yellow Creek and a Little Yellow Creek with both flowing into the Powell River near Wilson Hill, Lee Co. 8) *Obey's and Plank Camp Creeks of Copper Obey's Creek starts abt. 3 miles east of Ft. Blackmore, Scott Co., in Copper Ridge near a junction of State Rd. 660 and 661 flowing south abt. 6 miles and merges with Copper Creek at the junction of State Rd. 72 and 627. Plank Camp Creek starts abt. 2 miles southeast of Starnes Slant, Scott Co., and flows southeast abt. 4 miles going past the community of Apple Valley and through the Copper Creek Knobs and then merges with Copper Creek near a junction of State Rd. 627 and 619. 9) *greasy creek, a north branch of Copper Maybe this is a misspelling of Grassy Creek in Scott Co.? 10) *Possom Creek, a branch of the north fork of Holstein A slight possibility this could be the Possom Jaw Creek that starts near the Bland Co. line and follows State Rd. 42 into Smythe Co. and then into the North Fork of the Holston River. If anyone is interested in the most complete topographic, atlas, and gazetteer map for an entire state, you should check the Web site at <http://www.delorme.com> to see if a map is available for your state.
To: SW_VA-L@rootsweb.com Re: Kentish Families Hi Everyone, I need to thank all those kind folk who responded to my recent posting. I am replying individually to those who wrote, but it might take me a few days to catch up. (Sorry - but I don't have access to the 'net at weekends - and this slows me down a tad.). The replies I received - the kind words and nice thoughts - fully justify the image we have of you people being Gentlefolk. Thanks to you all for a great welcome. . Regarding my replies: Most will be best dealt with by private mails, however, some might well be of wider interest. If no-one has any objections, then I will post to the Group generally. The first of these messages will be posted in a couple of days. I will also be expanding the list of names in which I have an interest. Hopefully there will be mutual benefits from this. Again, my sincere thanks for your welcome. . . Cheers, Bill Castillion-Mander. Bemused in Kent - wondering why spring lasted only two days - and why winter needed to return again - and again. . .
My ggrandfather was Taylor Jett Creech, married Menerva Thompson. Sorry I don't have any dates of birth marriage or death. My grandfather was Charles Jett Creech born 1871 in Norton, Virginia, he died in 1946. My grandfather Charles was an only child. Currently this is where my search ends. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Wanda O'Brien
All members, I want to write a history of SW VA and install it on the WWW so it will be available for all SW_VA-L and Fincastle Forum members present and future. And for those who have special interest in the region for genealogical reasons. I want it to be a PEOPLE'S history. The history of the common people, our ancestors. Not the judge, sheriff, or governor. What was the life of the farmer, his wife & children? And I need YOUR help. I would invited everyone with knowledge of any aspect of the history to contribute. We have discussed much on the List in the past year. The subject area will be primarily west of Wytheville but some material of west of the New River can be included. I know many of you have detailed knowledge of food, clothing, buildings, slavery, ethnic and national origin, coal mining, farming, guns and hunting, the militia, Indians, trails and roads, tobacco, lead mines, gov't, land grants, etc. The list is very, very long. I have written a draft outline. It is installed at: http://www.conknet.com/~ehoward/HsSWVA.htm Take a look. See what you think. Where could you contribute? I would like the work somewhat documented. I'm not thinking of going into great depth but I would like to be a mile wide. I want to cover every subject and event that is of interest today. Murders, hangings, wars, babies being born. I don't want cold data but some statistics would be in order. e.g. average number of slaves owned, percentage of women who died in childbirth, children dying before the age of 6. Common diseases, and the most popular dance. As you can see. The list can go on forever. If it gets too big we will have to find somewhere to put it but for now we just need the pieces and a system to assemble them. Let me hear the interest and suggestions. PLEASE click REPLY and post your ideas to the LIST. -eddie sysop "Toto, I don't think we are in NH any more."
Listed in 1880 WCV census is Thomas C. RILEY 64yrs and wife Jane 62yrs. What is Jane's maiden name? They also have listed with them Caldonia SHAFFER, d/o Joel SHAFFER and Matilda HILL, both died before 1880 census. Caldonia SHAFFER is listed as "adopted." How are these families related, if they are? Thanks, Cindy CThomas5@prodigy.net
Would like more info for family listed in 1880 WCV census. Robert FLEENOR 62yrs, wife Elizabeth 61yrs, also listed with this family is Harriet SHAFFER, "adopted." Harriet is d/o Joel SHAFFER and Matilda HILL, both dead before 1880 census. What is the relationship between these SHAFFERs and FLEENORS? Why did Robert FLEENOR "adopt" Harriet SHAFFER?Thanks, Cindy CThomas5@prodigy.net

Weaver Creek: Begins near the Russell/Buchanan line near Big A Mtn. and runs in a southwestardly direction through Crackersneck and north of Combs Valley then turns south and dumps into the Clinch River at Artrip. Dumps Creek: Begins near the Russell/Dickenson line near the town of Carrie and runs south along Rt. 600 and the Norfolk Southern railway through South Clinchfield and dumps into the Clinch River right across from the Clinch River Steam Plant at Carbo. Priest's Creek: I don't have an actual Creek named Priest's Creek, however, Priest Mountain (Now called Webb Mountain) was located on the south side of current Rt. 19 between Rosedale and Smithfield. It is possible that Priest's Creek could have been an early name for either Elk Garden Creek or Dry Branch which run in a westardly direction on the north and south side of Priest/Webb Mountain respectively. The two creeks join at Elk Garden and continue west dumping into Big Cedar Creek south of Lebanon. Greasy Creek, a north branch of Copper: Could this be Grassy Creek? I found a Grassy Creek which begains around Lawsons Store near the intersection of Rt. 606 & 609 and runs in a southwestardly direction to Copper Creek. This is in the southwest corner of Russell Co. and looks like it actualy dumps into Copper in Scott Co.
Fleenors Creek is a branch of Cove Creek. Fleenors Creek has 2 forks, the southern fork starts at the base of the North side of Walkers Mountain east of where US 58 bottoms out going toward Valley Institute. Turn off on Wash Co road 782. This was on some of the Fleenor land and more recently the Jess Weatherly farm. The Northern fork starts on Wash Co 700 (Rich Valley Rods) about 1/2 mile east of the southern end of Wash Co 700. This was also on Fleenor land that was granted to Cornelius Carmack. The 2 branches come together at the old Valley Institute School (now Mumpower Sign Co). Fleenors Creek proceeds along Potter Road Wash Co 631 and terminates with Cove Creek at the intersection of 631 and 630 (Cove Creek Road). Fleenors Creek can be found on the Wash Co VA V-DOT map and on the USC&GS/TVA map Wallace Quadrangle. Jerry D Sharrett 1104 Buchelew Dr Kingsport, TN 37663 423-239-8975 jsharrett@intermediatn.net

You all the list, Earlier I mentioned several videos and would provide a source for those listed by PBS Video after I receive a new catalog with their address. I now have that address and also find they have a web page. If you go to http://shop.pbs.org/ and browse the history and family sections you can get a description and price. For those that wish to subscribe to the mail catalog call 1-800-531-4727. Their address is, PBS Home Video, 1320 Braddock Place, Alexander, VA 22314-1698. Purchases from this source is in support of PBS broadcasting and this is not an advertisement for the organization but to provide you a source of videos of videos that are no longer seen on PBS. They have a wide range of historical interest for us that are researching our roots. They list for example the series of "Ancestors" Video programs that were so popular on PBS a few years back. Other interest include Native American, Lincoln, Civil and Mexican War, African American, and History of all periods and locations. I have several videos I have purchased from them and place a very high value on their content. I clicked on the address above and it took me to the web page, so it does work. I hope some of you will benefit from this information. Robert Crabtree
Eddie, For many years when new settlements were made in Va..a committee would be appointed to approve where waterpowered mills could be located..If a person wanted to erect a mill and didn't own the land required for the mill dam and race, the committee would determine the value of the land and it could be bought..so a "millseat" would be a location suitable for the building of a mill..such as enough water available to run it and the "fall" of the creek from the location of the mill dam to the "millseat"..The less "fall" the creek had, the further upstream the dam had to be located in order that the water would run above and fall onto the mill wheel..Good millseats probably added value to otherwise useless land...G. Lee Hearl Abingdon, Va...
From the Wash. Co. survey: '" Michael Halfaker...100 ac...in the Rich Valley, including a Millseat...Commissioners Certificate...Beginning on the top of the Mill creek Ridge on the west side of the creek...above the Millseat...January 15, 1783 - Michael Halfacre, assignee of Nathan Reid...100 ac.."
