Volks, My dau. and I had a wonder drive today thru the mountains of southern WV. The area was the counties of McDowell and Wyoming. That is coal country. Very moutainous with few four lane roads. Many small villages with unique names. I can't get a true feel of the ethic origins. There are no Germans there. I think they are Welsh or Northern English. Some Scot-Irish but I do not think they are predominate. There are more Catholic churches than you would expect. That is from the Italians and Poles brought in at the turn of the 20th century to mine coal. There is a mix of Methodist, Baptist, Free Will and Regular, and Holiness. I did not see the large number of Primative and Missionary Baptist that I saw west of this area in E. KY. I did not get to see many surnames. There were Blankenship aplenty. Like I said, no German names. Here are some of the towns: Bluefield Keystone (anyone grow up hearing stories of wild Keystone?) Superior Welch Vivian North Fork Maybuery (This spelling is a clue, but I do not it. Welsh? N. England?) Coalwood Caretta Yukon War English Bartley Raysal Bradshaw Jolo Avondale Iaedale (can anyone phonetically spell this pronounciation? ) Ikes Fork Hanover (pure English) Baileyville Lilly Haven Oceana (Nice place but that name in WV? ) Jesse Steeles Pineville New Richmond (old English) Herndon Covel Matoaka (is this the place of the movie? ) Lashmeet Kegley (the only name that might be German) -eddie

Hi Guys!! I have been cleaning up my saved bookmarks anyway so w/ the request for bookmarks sent to the list, I thought I would just send them along. Some of these are good GENERAL urls, several NC/KY urls and some specific to our research in SW_VA. I am going to use hyperlinks because it is easier for me, but if you can't receive these or you want a few of the urls typed out, just e-mail me directly and I will be glad to do so. Hope this is useful. Hello. Help! I am searching for info on Elbert (R?) JACKSON, who is my great-grandfather. I cannot find access to the 1880 census for Russell County, VA. online. He married Willie Broyles in Union, Monroe County, West Virginia on August 8, 1902; the marriage record only lists his age as 23 and that his birthplace is Russell County, VA. I would Greatly appreciate any tips as to how to proceed or ANY info on this man. I sincerely thank you.

Any information on the Margaret (Peggy)Taylor and William Patton MARTIN family would be greatly appreciated. Their daughter Sarah Jane was my great grandmother. I have a copy of a marriage license dated Oct. 26, 1876 for her marriage to Philip M. Driver. It was performed at the home of Catherine Taylor in Russell County. I think Catherine may have been an aunt to Sarah Jane. There are photos at the Library of Virginia Site, one of which has the children of Patton Martin pictured including Jane Driver. There are also two photos of Patton and Peggy Taylor Martin cabin located at the end of Paint Lick Mountain. My grandmother, Mary Margaret Martin was born in 1968. Who was her father? 1850 and 1860 Russell County Census has Sarah Jane listed as a child. Also pictured in the photo is Fred Martin, son of Andrew and Mary Ferrell. The date of the photo is not listed but comparing the appearance of Sarah Jane with photos I have of her, I estimate the photo to have been taken 1920/30. Robert Crabtree [email protected]

These are not my names, so I have no other info. They were copied at library for my own family search, and I thought posting the other names may be helpful to someone out there. That is a good policy, but the new breed of email worm does not need for you to do ANYTHING except to get your mail from the server. If there is no antivirus program which scans downloading email, it will be ready to go before you can do anything about it. Clark Rogers ................................... G. The Norton Virus Protection is protecting against 47,638 viruses. There are an average of 15 to 30 new viruses each week added to the definition list. The KAK/WORM virus is the least of your worry. The Trojans are even more sneaky. Some once installed on your computer will allow a malicious operator take over your computer and do a lot of strange things. They can send e-mail to every one on your address book from your address. This is one way they can "spread" the virus. Go to http://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/subseven.htm as one example. It will list all the things that these Backdoor type Trojans can cause. I do not intend to abuse the rules of this list by continuing this subject. This problem is not going to go away and we must learn all we can to protect ourselves. These hackers are not content with just playing high tech war games. As I mentioned before, we all have too much at stake to loose all our records and put up with crashes and other computer non-sense. My last comment on the subject but will clarify or answer questions. Robert Crabtree
The security of our valuable genealogy records are at stake. We all need to do what ever we can to prevent the spread of these viruses. Clark Rogers was right on the button in his advice. I would like to mention, discourage your friends and relatives from sending those attached "good humor, angels, and virtual greetings" which are "mass" mailed to all "addressees" on their "list". Patched from Symantec Anti Virus Research Center: http://www.sarc.com/ for more virus information Wscript.KakWorm VBS.KakWorm spreads using Microsoft Outlook Express. It attaches itself to all outgoing messages via the Signature feature of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer newsgroup reader. The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole so that a viral file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system. Microsoft has patched this security hole. The patch is available from Microsoft's WEB site. If you have a patched version of Outlook Express, this worm will not work automatically. Robert Crabtree
