Hello! Well the mail has been slow from the list for a new lurker. So I'm hoping not to offend anyone with my questions: 1. I've just started searching for my paternal grandmother's lineage. Surname MCCLELLAN. Her name Mabel MCCLELLAN b. Oct 15, 1914. I'm certain there's research out there on the MCCLELLAN line. I'm hoping to find her birth mothers name as well, she died giving birth to Mabel. I believe her father's name was Schooler(sp?)Any help appreciated. 2. I'm also searching for any history/evidence of HEMOLYTIC ANEMIA in any geneaolgy research in this geographic region. Thanks! Apologizing in advance for being vague. Respectfully, Renee Geisler(Willing to do lookups in Clarke and Frederick County Virginia)

Traffic on the list seems to be slow today, so for those who are at home, safe from the speed demons, I'll provide you with a little historical data taken from scribbled notes that I just found. I took the info from my mother in 1992. At the time she was 95 and I was asking questions about the old days. I do not recommend you try any of the home remedies that she gave me. I do not stand responsible for the consequences. First, I asked her about superstitions. We have all heard the one about "Red skies at night, sailor's delight...." but I had never heard this rhyme before. She recited: "Evening gray and the morning red Pouring down rain on a traveler's head. Evening red and the morning gray Starts the traveler on his way." (She remembered this from so long ago. I can't even remember what I read yesterday!) I can hardly read my own scribbled notes. I had to write fast to keep up with Mama as she gave me these home remedies for various illnesses. Amounts of each ingredient were not given. So use your imagination! Some spelling may be incorrect. 1. Bad Cough -- Mullen. Wild cherry tree bark. Boil and strain. Add brown sugar, making syrup. 2. Stone Bruise -- Yarrow. Make poultice with cornmeal. White plantan and cabbage leaves. Wrap around heel with gauze. 3. Cold -- Boiled onion poultice with meal to stick together in gauze. Place on chest for cough. 4. Now this one really grabs me! Tonsilitis when a teenager. Choking, couldn't talk, tonsils swollen together. Made poultice of chimney soot, syrup, mixed with meal. Also, boiled soot to drink. Called Soot tea. Opens up throat. (If it didn't open the throat, it surely killed a person--my opinion.) 5. Worms. Vermafuze (?Sp.), a weed. Boil, strain molasses in it. (Every spring, each child took a dose.) Spoonful of sulphur and molasses. 6. I'm sure most of us can't even imagine such as this, and if my oldest sister were still alive, she would kill me for telling it. She was only about four, very ill. She wanted peaches. Began vomitting in front yard. She said, "Oh Mama, come out here and look!" Yes! Stomach worms, 9-1/2 inches long. Hope you aren't eating while reading this! 7. Growing Pains -- You've all heard of 'growing pains', haven't you? You may even recall having them. Well, I think you might enjoy this little story. My younger brother was about 10-11 yrs old. His legs would throb and he complained of them hurting all the time. Mama would have him sit in a bathtub of hot water hoping to relieve his pain. This kid was very modest; couldn't even stand having dirty hands. In a household of kids sharing bedrooms, running around half dressed while getting ready to go to school or church, he wouldn't let anyone see him unless he was fully dressed. We couldn't even go into the bathroom while he brushed his teeth. Mama was concerned because he had been in the bathtub soaking in the hot water for quite some time. She thought she had better check on him. Now folks, I came from a religious family where you just didn't use foul language of any kind, unless you whispered it under your breath. It was a forbidden sin! (I must tell this exactly as it was said, or it will lose its effect.) Mama opened the bathroom door slightly, and she got the shock of her life when my little toe-headed brother looked up from the tub, saw her peeking through the crack of the door, and blared out at her, "Dammit to Hell! I didn't say you could come in here." I still have many of the home remedies folks on the list shared in early 1999. They are a treasure! Pat

I can vouch that Lee is an excellent story teller and all around great entertainer. Have heard him a couple of time, but right now couldn't tell you where. Not so far as I know. Houston is not a common Melungeon surname, but then again, that is only one of several things to take into consideration. He would be proud if he were though!! Eddie & All, My stories are all original, never published but soon to be, I hope. My stories are ususally written about "wild & crazy" things my father or others have related to me through the years.. They are usually believeable and humorous, (I hope) but some delve into the "supernatural", spirits, witches, ghosts etc.. and the listener is left to believe or not! I have acquired the basis for some stories while researching my family lines, especially those in the mountains of N.C.. I don't tell fairytales or outrageous lies.. Many of mine are told as first person stories which audiences can relate to and picture mentally as I tell them.. I also play musical instruments and sing original songs such as "Biscuit Bakin' Baby From Bristol Tennessee" "The Day the Ceiling Fan Fell in Sunday Dinner" and several others.. I perform at theaters, festivals, retirement homes, dinners and other functions.. I entertained for the Boone Society Reunion in Winston Salem, N.C. this spring... AND.. I must say that my Rates are Very Reasonable...Come and See & Hear Me!! I didn't mean for this to turn into a commercial, but I couldn't resist! Thanks for your interest! G. He was born 20 Jan 1763 in Louisa Co. according to the records in Smyth Co.. He died 25 Apr 1854 and was 91 yrs. 5 mos. and 3 days old. Now, according to "Family Search", there was a Nathaniel harris born to William and Elizabeth Harris b. abt. 1762 In Hanover which is the Parent county of Louisa. Also, "Douglas Register" shows a Will Harris and Elizabeth Cradock as being married 28 Aug 1754. I have no information about Craddock or Craddock. Nathaniel Married Martha Byars/Byers May 27 or 29. 1788 according to Douglas. they had a daughter named Polly (Mary) b. 1 Apr 1788. This is from Douglas, also. I have some Deed info. from Louisa co. MOST of my information is from Smyth county and Washington (parent County of Smyth) Co. I have Nathaniel and Martha's children and grandchildren and down from there. I have been contacted by several cousins and have brought them up to the "Brickwall' of Nathaniel. We all are pounding away! Since there were so many Harrises in Louisa, Hanover, and Goochland and some neighboring counties it would seem that Nathaniel belongs to the rest of the families there. One theory has him from the Thomas and Sarah Offut Harris family. They had a Nathaniel and a Nathan. MY Nathaniel had sons named both Nathaniel and Nathan. I am considering that the faimilies that used both names are possibly related. Noel, I am so sorry that you were upset and hurt by all that has happened. Your information has been such a help to so many. I am hoping that when I(we) can disassemble our brick wall that we will find that we come from this gorup of Virginia Harrises. Though it is frutrating keep in mind that you have helped and are helping many people. i have a binder that holds the p/o of all the work you have sent out. I only hope that it will be of great value when I fing who Nathaniel belongs to. God Bless You and Yours. Cheers, Wilma Kelly [email protected] --part1_bb.6ac1ea8.26e14454_boundary--

The parents of General Sam Houston were Sam Houston (son of Robert Houston and Margaret Davidson) and Elizabeth Paxton. The General was born at Timber Ridge Plantation, Rockbridge County, VA. He married Eliza Allen from Gallatin, TN. The Houston family came from Ireland.
Does anyone have ready access to the Tennessee and Kings Mountain sections of the Drapers Manuscripts? I found out that my ancestor Charles Cocke is mentioned in both sets and am anxious to see if there is any helpful/interesting information. Phil

Hi Guys!! Just throwing this in. In Wheeling, WV there is an Oglesby Park, a beautiful large park that has to be connected to the family you are searching. From a long ago memory, they were quite rich and donated the land, I THINK. :-) NancyS THE MELUNGEON HEALTH EDUCATION AND SUPPORT NETWORK: http://www.melungeonhealth.org SPARKS Genealogy: http://SparksGenealogy.net
Having lived in Anderson County, TN, the last 20 years, every time I went from there to Cumberland Gap, TN, or Ewing, VA, I passed thru Campbell County and a long stretch known as Powell Valley on into Claiborne County, TN. A beautiful drive if there ever was one! In looking at a sketch of an old map which includes the dates when counties of TN were created, it appears that that portion of Powell Valley, TN, in 1790 may have been in Hawkins County. Greene County and Washington County connected to Hawkins and Sullivan Counties near the border of KY. Is this the same Powell Valley you are discussing in VA??
Hi all: If this helps, I have a map that shows part of the Powell River Valley. This is on my Charles Cocke webpage at: http://www2.southwind.net/~crowther/Cocke/_StateVA.htm He lived in that area from about 1780 to 1805.
