I am looking for some to do a lookup on the index/census for Isaac Newton Brown who enrolled in the Conferate army May 29, 1861, at Wythville. He may have been living there in 1860. He was no longer in Tazewell in 1860 as he was in 1850. The only other county he may have been in is Smyth CO. Thanks very much, Ann

Hi Pat. Yes, my ancestors were the Blakemores that the fort was named after. The name has been spelled both ways, but most of my papers have Blakemore. Good Morning all! Just wondering if you guys can post or email me some of your favorite websites for researching...I'm spending alot of time on the internet and not getting anywhere. Thanks for any input. Researching: McCLELLAN, HUBBELL and FORD. Regards, Renee [email protected]
Hello list - I am looking for a copy of the 1860 Lee Co census, transcribed by Earl Edward Hobbs, from Footprints Publishers. I remember seeing this address on some website and I can't find the address now. Thanks for your help. Sue
I have used the Library of Virginia site primarily for researching land records and have been generally pleased with it (although I did notify them of a couple of grants that were not located on the pages they said they were). I haven't used the site much for other types of records though. Arley Paul V. Hi, I agree, there is a lot to be desired in the offering on this site, maybe that is why it is free for 10 days. While on the subject of "quality" in what is offered, I wonder if everyone is satisfied with what is offered on the Internet at the Library of Virginia site, am I the only one who finally, just gets disgusted and gives up? Paul
Barb, I am glad I am not the only one who thinks that there is a quality problem. I think it is a major concern that should be highlighted as you did. I would expect such documents supported by a major genelogical business to be much better. I don't expect it to be perfect, but there are major omissions (as I had previously stated due to my having just reviewed the 1910 VA census at the local LDS history center.) If you include the many easily identified typo's that have numbers imbeded in words, then what other mistakes are in the file? This attitude of accepting such poor quality is one of the reason that there is so much bad data out there on the internet. It certainly supports the notion that everything should be checked against original documents. What arrogance to think we will pay for such poor quality. Another example is that recently I obtained several original documents about some local community histories written in the early 1900's. I discovered the same documents posted (by an unnamed prestigious organization) on the internet. I was shocked at the number of mistakes made in translating the text in the documents to the internet. To the organization's favor they readily accepted my corrections. I am sure most researchers are aware of this problem, but it really bugs me. Thanks for the sanity check, George ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barb Norvell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 13, 2000 8:21 PM Subject: Re: SW_VA-D Digest V00 #287 > I to looked at the Census offered. I to looked at the Census offered. On one surname, I did great, but try and look for a very common name or a name that can be a given name or a surname. I tried looking for the Surname Warren. I visited the Ancestry.com and the 1910 VA census database today for quite a while. I greatly appreciate the effort to publish them and don't want to appear too picky, but has anybody else noted that there are lots of obvious typos? A number of names and words have numbers inserted in the middle of them as an example. Simple spell checks would have quickly found them. There are also some names missing. It just so happens that several weeks ago I reviewed the 1910 Census film for VA at a local LDS Family History Center. I copied off names of interest. I can not find them in the Ancestry.com file. Very interesting! As I type this I am listening to news about the USS COLE being attacked today in Yemen. 5 dead, dozens missing, and hurt. I live in Va. Beach and this will hit us all hard. Please remember the crew of the USS COLE and their families in your prayers. My husband just retired from the Navy, he was an engineman and where the ship was hit would have been where he would have been working had he been on a ship that was hit in this area. I would like to send a poem about those great men and their job to honor those. It is called SNIPE'S Lament. Snipe's Lament Now each of us from time to time has gazed upon the sea And watched the warships pulling out,to keep the country free And most of us have read a book or heard a lusty tale, about the men who sail these ships, through lightning, wind and hail. Its down below the water line that it takes a living toll A hot metal, living hell that sailors call the hole. Where boilers like a hellish heart, with blood of angry steam are molded gods without remorse ,nightmares in a dream. The men who keep the fires lit and make the engines run Are strangers to the world of light, and rarely see the sun They have no time for man or God,no tolerance for fear their aspect pays no living thing the tribute of a tear, For there's not much that men can do that these men haven't done. beneath the decks deep in the hole to make the engines run. And every hour of every day, they keep the watch in hell For if the fires ever fail, their ship's a useless shell. When ships converge to have a war, upon an angry sea the men below just grimly smile at what their fate might be They're locked below like men foredoomed who hear no battle cry. It's well assumed that if they're hit,the men below will die. I've seen these sweat-soaked heros fight,in superheated air, to keep their ship alive and right, though no one knows they're there. So when you see a ship pull out,to meet a warlike foe. remember faintly, if you can,the men who sail below.
Could some do a look up for me on one of these two census? On the 1840, Looking for William T. Brown, wife Martha/Patsy and children Ambrose, Orville, and William Franklin. They may have lived near William's sisters Lydia and Cosby who were married to Louthern/Louther/Louthian, John and Henry. On the 1860 looking for John and Lydia Louthern/Louther/Louthian,their children and the son of William and Martha Brown, Thomas E. Brown age 14. He had become an orphan by 1853. Thanks very much, Ann
