I am not sure if I replied, so I will now. My lineage is Solomon Wolfe and Mary Cowden. I would be glad to share their info, if you don't have it Donald Wilson Pittman, son of Ina Elberta Wheeler, grandson of Henry Wise Wheeler and Ina Amanda Johnson, all of Smyth Co. VA. I have researched a direct line back to late 1700's in Russell County (surname JACKSON) using the US Census mainly. What would be possible sources for genealogy information of Russell County for the 1700's? Anything online? THANK YOU for any possible guidance. Kelli JACKSON ------- End of forwarded message -------
There was a lady doing research on an Echolas in Bristol and I found a mention of her in a book. I have lost her address, so please if still on mailing list write me! If anyone knows how to contact her let her know.
I found this to be interesting reading, and thought I would pass it on. The Danville and East Tennessee Railroad needed help financially and it would be to Bristol - Goodson, Va. advantage to assist, however, the town needed a population of at least 5,000 residents. ( population at the time not even close). On Dec. 16.1889, it was decided that a census should be taken, so the census counters went on a "people counting hunt" Visitors from N. Y. were counted, people who had gotten off the train to have lunch in town were counted, people from close surrounding areas were counted, and later even accusations that a few East Hill Cemetery residents had their citizenship's renewed. If you were people and in town or close to town you were counted as a citizen of the town. On Jan. 4.1890 the census result was 5,382 citizens in Bristol. The "real count was closer to 2,902. This honest count was taken and sent to Richmond, but found in a census taker's drawer some 10 years later. A judge refused to rule on the census, but the suit pointed out almost certainly that a city status and incorporation had been obtained by fraud. Ten years later in 1900 the population was still short of 5,000 people by about 500 people. Source: Bristol,Tennesse / Virginia by Bud Phillips. I received this book as an early Christmas present and will do lookup of names mentioned on request, but the book is mainly history of the town and its' early and prominate people so you need to have an old family name in the town to be mentioned.
Hello: In Grayson County, James Anderson married Martha Patsy Nuckolls in 1809. They had a son James, Jr., married Mary (Polly) Ross in Grayson on Mar 4, 1830. I have another James Anderson in my line born about 1802 who married Mary (Polly) Bonham. Mary Bonham was the daughter of William Bonham and Elizabeth Williams. I descend from James and Mary's daughter Jane. I am trying to find out the parents of my James Anderson. His middle initial is possibly R. If I'm not mistaken the other James' middle initial was P. Yes, too, too close. If there are any Anderson researchers out there with any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks so much, Julia Julia Williams Kodak Researching Adams, Anderson, Baker, Bedsaul, Brannock, Creed, Dickens, Golding (Golden), Gollehon, Goodson, Johnson, Norman, Roland (Rowland, Rolling), Suits (Suit), Upchurch, Williams and Wymer in Carroll, Grayson, and Smyth Co., Va. and Surry Co., NC and Residents of Shell Creek, Carter County, Tennessee. Roots And Branches of SW, VA. and Surry Co., NC. "Every house is builded by some man; but He that built all things is God." Good Morning: Is there a kind soul out there that would have access and do a Wythe County marriage look up for me? I am looking for the marriage of James (middle initial possibly R) Anderson and Mary (Polly) Bonham. They lived in Grayson but I have not found their marriage there and believe perhaps they may have married in Wythe. James was born in 1802 and Mary about 1803. They were married sometime before 1831. I am desperate to find James' parents. I have Grayson Co. marriages 1793-1852 and Carroll County 1842-1853 if I can help someone else. Dear List Members, I just recently found out that my g-g-grandfather, Abner NELSON, was born October 26, 1793, in Grayson County. I have received some information that his parents were Thomas NELSON and Margaret REID from Cumberland County, England. Because of date discrepancies, I believe this information to be inaccurate. Abner NELSON may have married Lucy Ausborn on March 4, 1815, in Grayson County. I am hoping that someone may have access to the census that could give me any information on Abner, his parents and his siblings so that I may know which direction to research from here. Thank you very much. Connie Ahlgren
