My main interest right now is the family of William Patton and Margaret (Peggy) Taylor MARTIN which includes Sarah Jane DRIVER, Mary FERRELL, Hazel McGUIRE and Catherine TAYLOR. They lived bordering Tazewell, Smyth and Russell County with most of their records having them living in Russell County. Any information on the members of this family would be greatly appreciated. Also CRABTREE, SHEFFEY, COLLINS, HARRIS and LOWE I also need photos of Boissevain School, Tipple Hollow in Boissevain and Pegleg's Barber Shop in Pocahontas ca 1940. Uncle Willis had a little Mom and Pop store down the hill from where we lived on Haddon Street. This is where we got our candies, and other assorted junk food to carry up in East Hill Cemetery and have our picnics and play when we were kids. I remember 2 for a penny candy and pop for a nickle,so were candy bars. Mama would send us down to Uncle Willis's store to buy a nickels worth of bolonga, if he cut it thick you got 5 slices, and if he cut it thin, you got 10 or more slices. Uncle Willis must have give credit to everybody in the family, plus all the goodies he handed out to us kids. Uncle Willis and his little store is one of my fondest childhood memories. He made sandwiches for the workers at the Bristol Door, a nickel for a little sandwich or a dime for a big sandwich and he give credit to lots of folks. He wrecked a car hauling moonshine, it flipped several times and he was crippled used a cane. At the top of Hadon Street was Tom Merrit's little store, he wasn't kin to us, but he was good to all us kids that lived there on the hill and like Uncle Willis gave us goodies to haul off to East Hill to have picnics and play. He use to give me pie tins and little coke bottles from the store vendors so I could play house with them. I wish I had kept those lil coke bottles, they'd be worth a lot of money now! They were miniture bottles and the stuff in them moved when you tilted the bottle. Please feel free to post surnames on which you are working. I was thinking the other day that I would like to get the _People's History of SW VA __ website activited. I have some material and it would be a work in progress. It might inspire some lively discussions on the subjects. Religion, accents/dielects, and foods are a few favorites of mine. Also, I would like to see some extracts of SW VA wills posted for the purpose of seeing what they can tell us about the life and times of our SW VA ancestors. Their standard of living, their means of livelyhood, etc. I know it is hard to find the time but I hope many of us could put some time into it. Thanks. -eddie owner/proprietor

Hello everyone, I have an ancestor James Peery NEEL/NEAL who I have found in Tazewell Co. VA and based on the census records and other records I have determined the following about my GGG Grandfather. James Peery NEAL was b. 11 Apr 1810 in VA and d. 6 Aug 1880 Tazewell Co.VA. He married Delilah KIRK the daughter of William and Margaret (Brooks) KIRK. According to death records for Tazewell Co. VA my James Peery NEAL was the son of Calvan NEAL and Nancy (??) Neal. The children of James Peery NEAL and Delilah included (per 1850 census) Peggy (Margaret), Nancy, William, Frances, John (Jonathan), Louisa, and Samuel. In the 1880 census I found James P NEEL and Delilah NEEL living with their son Jonathan A. NEEL. Does anyone know if there is a connection with the PEERY family of Tazewell Co. VA and the NEAL family? Does anyone have a reference for a Calvan NEEL/NEAL who would have been born probably before 1790 as James was born in 1810 in VA. I found a Nancy PEERY in VA records. Might she have married Calvan NEAL and thus be a parent of James Peery NEAL?
