    3. After waiting more than a year, I finally got a chance to read the information on Charles Cocke in the Draper manuscripts. As indicated in the indexes, there were several references to Col. Cox. Some related to mine, but I also found that there were at least two other Col. Cox's who were discussed- Gabriel Cox (of PA, who helped George Rogers Clark) and Isaac Cox (who founded Cox's Station in Nelson Co, KY). To give a flavor for how things went: There were two letters from Gov. David Campbell. In the first, he said that he had met Col. Cox but did not know much about him. In the second, he said "I have seen him and have heard much about him but could not now undertake a narrative of his life." [So when would have been a better time???] There was a letter from Col. William Martin which had about a long paragraph on my Col. Cox of Powell's Valley, but which is so blurred as to be virtually unreadable. The only good thing that came out of this was that when Draper asked Martin about Cox, Draper indicated that he thought that Cox had a Station in Powell's Valley about 1791. I then found an account about a visit to Col. Cox's Station- only to find out, when I got home, that the Cox's Station mentioned in the account was the one located in Nelson County, KY which was run by Col. Isaac Cox. Has anyone ever heard of a Cox's station located in Powell's Valley along the Kentucky Road? Phil

    2. I am wondering about the ancestry of a HARMON: Susan Harmon born about 1900 and married to a Cadle in Bristol, VA She died about five years ago. Unfortunately, I never got to meet her. I believe the family said that they thought she was from the Cherokee, NC area. I know this is a long shot, but I would love any information on Susan HARMON Cadle. Thank you, Diane Costello > You will find that some of the Harmons of Tazewell co., Va. came from Floyd > co., Va. Also, there was a Harmon family who settled very early near Burkes > Garden.. 3. This link doesn't work for me, so if others have the same problem, try this: 1. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/ 2. Scroll down to the subheading "Mailing Lists". 3. Click on either "Interactive Search" or "Threaded Archives Search". (I don't know what the difference is...they both seem to work the same.) 4. Type in "SW_VA" (or whatever list you want to search). ---------- Margaret Mabrey <[email protected]> wrote: > http://www.archiver.rootsweb.com

    1. Black sheep, Lee Co VA 1883/1884
    2. Since there has been talk of black sheep, here are some from Lee Co that may be related to my husbands MARTIN family. If anyone can fill in any details I'd love to know more. Below is ALL I know about these people. (From some hard to read copies of some letters written in Rose Hill and Douglas, Lee Co VA.) 10 September 1883: Russell killed his father-in-law with an ax to the head. Also hit Mr Dean's/Lilln's (?) son in the head, but he is getting better. People think Russell will hang. Also: Evan(?) NEFF killed long Steve Thompson. Steve lived one day and one night. There is a reward out for him (Neff). 22 April 1884, Russell is going to be hung May 9th. He says he is ready to get it over with. Guess we will go watch him hang. (Russell could be a first name or a surname. Sounds as if he was fairly close to the MARTIN family.) 28 April 1884 Mike(?) NEFF in jail in Sneadville Solveig Berry

    1. More about John Peery NEAL (11 Apr 1810 - 6 Aug 1880)
    2. William Groth
    3. Hello everyone, I have an ancestor James Peery NEEL/NEAL who I have found in Tazewell Co. VA and based on the census records and other records I have determined the following about my GGG Grandfather. James Peery NEAL was b. 11 Apr 1810 in VA and d. 6 Aug 1880 Tazewell Co.VA. He married Delilah KIRK (b. 19 Apr 1815 VA; d. 15 Nov 1892) the daughter of William and Margaret (Brooks) KIRK. According to death records for Tazewell Co. VA my James Peery NEAL was the son of Calvan NEAL and Nancy (??) Neal. I have found references in transcriptions of the Tazewell Co. VA 1820 & 1830 census for a family of Colven/Calven/Colvin NEEL which I believe fits with the family above. He is listed and I believe is related to the other NEAL/NEEL families there including Robert NEEL, Alexander NEEL, Mary NEEL and William NEEL. I have noted in these records that Calvan/Colven NEEL was born ca 1760-1770. I am hoping to connections to the PEERY family of Tazewell Co. VA and to the NEEL/NEAL families listed for this county and for Giles Co. VA. Does anyone know if there is a connection with the PEERY family of Tazewell Co. VA and the NEAL family? Does anyone have a reference for a Calvan NEEL/NEAL who would have been born probably before 1790 as James was born in 1810 in VA. I found a Nancy PEERY in VA records. Might she have married Calvan NEAL and thus be a parent of James Peery NEAL?
