    1. [SW_VA] Carter County TN Delinquent Tax List for 1850
    2. I posted at the site the list of delinquent taxes for landowners of Carter county, TN for the year 1850 (it seems somewhat appropriate to post a list like that at this time of year <grin>). The URL is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~familyinformation/ I have a direct link on the main index but if for some reason it does not work, just click Transcripts, then History, and it will be under the New header. I am sending this to the Rowan, Davidson, Carter, NCNR, SWVA & TNJohnson lists as I have seen some of the surnames floating around in various emails from each.

    3. SueBee, This is not is response to your post inquiry about William Russell. I am researching Claiborne, Scott and Campbell Counties, TN for Russell. Lee County, VA is connected to Claiborne Co, TN. I am having difficulties in JOHN RUSSELL. He had a one son named William Rose Russell born in about 1892. He has other children, I was wondering if you had any one that could possibly tie to John Russell from the Lee Co, VA Russells? (This information was taken from Dr. Lawrence Fleenor's book entitled BENGE.)<<<<< I have seen several versions of this incident but the one I tend believe as most logical can be found in Daniel Boone by Bakeless.. It says that William Russell came looking for his son, a slave (servant) and the Boone boy after his son failed to return home.. and that William Russell took his sons body home and buried him.. One version says that Daniel Boones party stopped at Russells place and told William Russell about Kentucky and "convinced" him to move there, William Russell supposedly was behind the Boone party.. This story has no credence at all because William Russells wife was sick at the time and he was established on the Clinch River and probably had no interest in moving to Ky. His interests were in acquiring land in that area to sell to others..He never did move to Ky.. In 1774 William Russell sent Daniel Boone to Ky. to warn the surveyors of the Indian troubles. Boone was gone about two months on that trip.. This occurred shortly after a treaty had been made with the Cherokees concerning lands in Ky. (part of Va. at the time) Capt Russell sent a group of Scouts from the Clinch settlement to find the river which divided Va. from the Cherokee lands.. They traveled down to about Knoxville or Nashville and returned in 21 days.. G. Lee Hearl Authentic Appalachian Storyteller Abingdon, Va.

    2.    This might help in pinpointing the location of James Boone when he was killed by a party of both Cherokee and Shawnee Indians. "On the night of October 9th (1773), the Daniel Boone party camped at the head of Station Creek in Powell Valley, but night fall caught the party containing the Hargis family and the others on the wrong side of Wallen's Ridge, at Fannon's Spring on Wallen's Creek at current Stickleyville, just three miles from Daniel."     This was where James Boone (age 16) and Henry Russell were tortured, stabbed and tomahawked to death.       "Rebecca Boone wrapped the bodies of James and Henry in a common linen sheet, and buried them together where they lay."     Although Daniel was anxious to travel on to KY, he and his wife returned to Castle's Woods where the Boones spent the winter in an abandoned cabin at Moore's Fort.     (This information was taken from Dr. Lawrence Fleenor's book entitled BENGE.) Note:  The Clinch River runs south through Anderson County, TN. (Clinton and Oak Ridge)--unless there are two Clinch Rivers!!               Pat

The area is named Stickleyville VA; however, the mailing address is Duffield VA. The present day boundry line between Lee Co and Scott Co is located on top of Powell Mountain. The community of Duffield is actually in Scott Co VA. Don't ask me to explain the Duffield names in both counties. A few years ago someone claimed that James Boone was killed further west than Stickleyville in Lee Co--nearer to Cumberland Gap, but soon it was decided that old records still pointed to the base of Powell Mt in Stickleyville. 3. Powell Valley starts in in what is currently Wise County . The exact head of the valley is located about 2 miles from Norton in what is called Binge's Gap and runs south and slightly west. It extend through Lee County and on into Tenn. The Clinch River runs parallel to Powell Valley. The Powell River forms Powell Valley. In an east to west direction there are the Holstein (3 branches), the Clinch, and Powell Rivers. I believe the location where James Boone was killed is located near the small town of Duffield in Scott County. All these locations would have been in Washington County in 1773.
