Published in the Dalles, OR - Chronicle April 25, 2002. Shirley Mae Newson, 73, a resident of Klickitat (Washington), died of cancer at her home on April 11, 2002. She was born in Astoria (Oregon) on April 19, 1928, the youngest of two children to Truman "Ed" and Hazel Sutton. She attended school in Portland. She married Maurice "Morrie" Newson on July 22, 1946, in Portland. In 1950 they moved to the Oregon coast where she was employed at a motel. She was active with Boy Scouts and Lions Auxiliary while raising five children. In 1961, her husband took a job with Joe Tenney and they moved to The Dalles. She was employed full time with Montgomery Wards and was later employed for a number of years with Stadelman Fruit Company. She sold a variety of products and gave parties for those products. She also enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, canning, riding her motorbike, swimming and a good laugh, but mostly spending time with her family. While living in The Dalles she finished raising her five children and helped raise a few of her 10 grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Maurice; her five children and their spouses, Harold and Sara Newson, Robert and Lori Newson, Ronald Newson, Thomas and Diane Newson and Carol Ann Newson-Whitehurst; 10 grandchildren, Chris, Bambi, Patti and Mike Newson, Marty Hester and Dorothy Hansen, all in this area; Geoff and Eric Newson in Portland; and Jennifer and Anthony Whitehurst. Cremation was at Columbia Cremation & Burial. Private interment will be held at the Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland where she will be placed beside her brother on the Sutton family plot. -- Danny & Nancy Clemmer www.clemmer.org
