Published in the Cincinnati, OH - Enquirer and Post August 21, 2004 Sutton Landry, 55, of NKU Rebecca Goodman Enquirer staff writer He was director of Small Business Development Center Lives remembered ANDERSON TWP. - Sutton Landry, director of the Small Business Development Center at Northern Kentucky University for 25 years, died Tuesday of prostate cancer at Mercy Anderson Hospital. He was 55. Mr. Landry designed and presented small business training programs and helped hundreds of people start and grow small businesses. During his tenure, he helped them secure more than $75 million in financing for their business ventures. "Fifteen years ago I consulted Sutton with the start of Campus Book & Supply," said David Kline, the store's owner, in a letter to Mr. Landry's family. "It is a very successful business these days. Sutton was always there when I needed advice. He helped many businesses get started and kept them going. He was a good friend - not only to me but to many, many business people in the Northern Kentucky area. He will always be part of Campus Book & Supply." Last October the development center presented Mr. Landry with its Kentucky State Star Award at the Association of Small Business Development Centers conference in San Diego, Calif. A native of Boston, he also lived in Davis, Calif., before attending Miami University in 1967. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Miami in 1970, then was drafted into the Army. After his hitch, he returned to Miami, where he received a master's degree in English literature in 1975. From there he went to the University of Cincinnati College of Business Administration, receiving an MBA in finance in 1977. Mr. Landry was campaign manager for Lou Schroeder when she ran against Tom Kindness in the old Eighth Congressional District in 1978, according to his wife, Gloria. His next position was as vice president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, responsible for business retention and development. Mr. Landry was active in civic events in Hamilton, including the Antique Car Parade and Fort Hamilton Days. He was the founding director of the Family Business Center at NKU and a member of Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, serving on local and regional boards. Mr. Landry was a business columnist for the Cincinnati Post and the Cincinnati Business Courier and an alumnus of Leadership Northern Kentucky. He was named Economic Development Professional of the Year by the Northern Kentucky Area Development District in 1996. "He was just an extremely caring, nurturing individual," his wife said. "He enjoyed music. He enjoyed his family. He enjoyed teaching. He thoroughly enjoyed his work." In addition to his wife of 34 years, survivors include his mother, Elaine of Kent, Ohio; a son, Adam of Anderson Township, and four brothers, Doug of Stow, Ohio, Philip of Kent, John of Lexington and Sam of Poland, Ohio. A memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday at Anderson Hills United Methodist Church, 7515 Forest Road in Anderson Township.
