Published in the Daytona Beach FL - Chronicle-Herald July 24, 2004 TREEN, Muriel Edith - 84, Daytona Beach, Fla. and Malagash, died Monday, July 5, 2004, in Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach following a short illness. Mrs. Treen was born Muriel Edith Sutton on September 23, 1919, in Orangeville, the second of five children of Elwood and Edith Sutton. A graduate of Orangeville District High School, she also earned a nursing degree at Toronto Western Hospital in 1941. After joining the Royal Canadian Army Medical Service in August 1943, she served overseas during the Second World War, and was stationed in England. She was commissioned a lieutenant nursing sister and served until July 1946. While stationed at Aldershot, England, she met George Leander Treen, a Royal Canadian Air Force navigator. The couple married April 26, 1947, in Toronto. The Treens moved to Dartmouth, where Mrs. Treen worked as a registered nurse and where the couple's two sons were born. In January 1963, the family moved to Daytona Beach. In Daytona Beach, Mrs. Treen worked as a nurse at Daytona Beach General Hospital before joining the Volusia County Health Department in the mid-1960s where she was a public health nurse until her retirement in the early 1980s. At the end of her career, she worked in the department's heart screening unit. Mrs. Treen enjoyed golf and was a past member of the Daytona Beach Golf Club and a current member of the Daytona Beach Golf Club 49ers, a ladies golf group. Mrs. Treen was a member of Highlands Presbyterian Church, Daytona Beach. After retirement, the Treens split their time between Florida and Nova Scotia. Mrs. Treen was predeceased by husband, George Treen in 2003; sister, Phyllis White in 1997, and brother, Bill Sutton in 1968. Survivors include sons, Dana B. Treen (Sharon), St. Augustine, and Ronald E. Treen, Daytona Beach; sisters, Marion White and Betty Veals, both of Orangeville, Ont.; grandson, Burton C. Treen (Jennifer), and great-grandson, Caleb B. Treen, all of Middleburg, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. September 2 in Malagash United Church on Malagash Road, Malagash.
