Published in the Corvallis, OR - Gazette Times 25 Aug 2004 Longtime Bellfountain resident William "Bill" Sutton died Sunday at his home in Philomath of complications from brain cancer. He was 64 years old. He was born in Red Bluff, Calif., to Clarence and Mary Sutton. He was the second of their six children. He joined the Marine Corps at the age of 19. He met DeAnne Stamps at the Oregon State Fair in 1960 while on leave. They married in March 1962 and moved to Tustin, Calif., where he finished his tour of duty. They returned to the Willamette Valley, where Bill began a career as a saw filer. He started at Larson Lumber Company in Philomath and then worked at Bohemia Lumber Company in Cottage Grove and IP Miller in Bellfountain. He retired after 20 years at Mary's River Lumber in Philomath. He was well-respected for his efforts to stay on the cutting edge of saw-filling technology. Bill and DeAnne raised their four children and two nephews in the Bellfountain community. After Bill's retirement, they enjoyed traveling to Mexico with his mother, visiting their friends, the O'Mealy's, in Florida, and touring Canada. Bill enjoyed the challenge of traveling across the United States and always finding a free place to spend the night. Between trips, Bill and DeAnne maintained a vacation home at Crescent Lake with his brother, Joe and sister-in-law, Diane, where they enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. Bill was an enthusiast of western and John Wayne movies. He was an avid reader of Louis L'Amour and W.E.B. Griffin and especially enjoyed Griffin's series, "The Corps." He was also a knowledgeable history buff. Bill fought a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. He was supported by his wife, DeAnne; daughters, Debbie, Donna and Dena; son, Willie; nephew, Lee; and his beloved grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother and five siblings. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at his home, 23670 Woods Creek Road in Philomath. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Brain Tumor Society or the Walker Rim Riders Snowmobile Club.
