    3. St. Mary's Cemetery, Portland, Oregon One sutton found: SUTTON, ELIZABETH St. Mary's Cemetery, founded in 1858, was the pioneer Roman Catholic cemetery in Portland, Oregon. It was located on SE Stark Street, between 24th and 26th Avenues. Seventy-one years after the first burial, the cemetery was closed, and the remains were transferred to Mt. Calvary cemetery. If there were sexton records of the interments, they have not been located. Efforts were made by the Archdiocese of Portland in the 1930s to name as many as possible of the burials. Around 700 were determined. The souls who rested in St. Mary's Cemetery were some of Portland's early pioneers. There were Indian War veterans, saloon keepers, riverboat captains, laborers, capitalists, etc. These people helped build Portland. The fact that the records of the interments of Portland's Catholic pioneers were lost prompted my attempt to rebuild those events. Church registers, vital records, history books, wills, obituaries, and oral traditions were some of the sources used to identify the people who were laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery. By the time I was through, over 2,000 interments were located. The index contains the names of the people who were buried in the cemetery. It includes names of parents when they were listed in the church books. It contains the name of a spouse or children if they were listed in obituaries. Altogether, there are 4327 names. If you find a name that interests you, send $2.00 for a copy of the page (and the title page). If you wish a copy of the 265 page book, it is $17.50, postage included.
