SEDAM Marriage: 1 Oct 1832 Switzerland Co., IN --------------------------------------------- 8 F: Catherine SUTTON Birth: abt 1814 Death: abt 1852 Kansas or Missouri Spouse: John HAMMON (HAMMOND) Marriage: 7 Aug 1836 Switzerland Co., Indiana Descendants of this John C. SUTTON have been going on the assumption that he is the same John C. listed in the 1820 Dearborn Co., Indiana census as the head of a family that included 7 males and 3 females. They were listed as 1 male under age 10, 3 males-aged 10 to 16, 2 males-aged 16 to 26 and one male 45 and over with 2 females under 10 years and one (probably his spouse) 26 to 45 years. We've also gone on the assumption that the 1830 census shows John C. Sutton had moved to Switzerland Co., Indiana and his family included 1 male - 60 to 70 years old, 1 female 15 to 20 years and 1 female 40 to 50 years. (Most of the children were marriaged in Switzerland County, Indiana.) For as long as I can remember, we've been using an estimated date of birth for our John C. of 1765-1782. But, if we are right about the census data --- that estimate cannot be correct. A man "over age 45" in the 1820 census could have been born no later than 1775. A man age "60 to 70" in 1830 could have been born no later than 1770 and no earlier than 1760 (roughly, depending on his date of birth compared to the census taking date.) That means we should be looking for a John C. born absolutely no earlier than 1760 and no later than 1771. That narrows down the field quite a bit. If we apply the same logic to the woman thought to be his wife, (1820 census) she could have been born between 1775 and and 1794. If they are two separate wives, we're still looking at one being born in this time frame and the other being born between 1780 and 1790. Since the children of John C. began to appear about 1800, their mother more than likely was no older than about 15 at the time of the first birth. That puts the mother at a birth date no later than 1775. In a nutshell, my theory is our John C. was born between 1760 and 1771. The mother of those children (or at least the first few) was born prior to 1775. So, of all the possible "Johns" born in that time period, which ones fit the requirements? If we pool our resources, we can identify this man. Carolyne -- Carolyne is: http://www.geocities.com/carolynegould
