    1. Help with Samuel and John T. Sutton

    3. I've been trying to find out what happened to Samuel Sutton and his son, John Thomas, after 1885. Samuel was born about 1835 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. He married my ggg-grandmother Sophia Spiller Smith 08 Oct 1860 in the Register Office, St.Thomas, Devon, England. Sophia and Samuel had one son, John Thomas Sutton, born 25 Nov 1860 at Jubilee Place, St. Leonard, Devon, Eng. Sophia came to the USA without Samuel and John Thomas aboard the SS Cuba in 1870. Some of her children by her first husband, James Smith, had already come to the USA, beginning in 1866. According to Memphis City Directories, and the 1880 US Census, Samuel and John were in Memphis with Sophia and her two sons, George Smith and Henry James Smith. They lived at 107 Vance St. in Memphis from 1880 until 1886, and I believe the family were the residents of 73 Causey in Memphis from 1874 - 1879. George Smith left Memphis after 1880 and eventually wound up in Brooklyn, NY. Henry Smith left after the directory was published in 1881. John Sutton was on the 1885 directory and Samuel on the 1886 directory. I've not found Samuel or John after that. Sophia left after 1884 and was with her son-in-law and daughter, John and Charlotte Way in the 1900 census of Smith County, Texas, and she died their in 1901. If anyone is working on this Sutton line, I would be most interested in hearing from you. Any suggestions will also be appreciated. Sandy Coulter
