Here is what some people have written concerning the origins of the name Sitton: As far as I know, John Sitton (Sutton) arrived in Enfield, Ct. from Aldeborough, England in 1628 on the Dilligent (Dilligence?). He had two sons, Philip who started the NC ironworks, and I don't recall the other. As I understand it, this is where the name started and branched from there in America. I have read the grant for the land and the forge in NC and BOTH names are in the document. Comments? Corrections? Thanks! The Sitton surname traces its origins with biblical times. The name Zettune comes from the phoenician term for olive..a biblical tree, also the name SIDON,an important port in the middle east, now Lebanon before Damascus. The surname originated from merchants of seta(silk) & zetn (olives)during the crusades. The only American Catholic SAINT,( ref.catholic Encyclopedia)ANNE SETTON,married a Setton and after her husband¨s death, left for convent in florence,Italy. My family's branch came from palestine..to argentina and settled in panama. In mexico, colombia there are also unrelated Sittons.I was told that the surname Sitton is one of the first surnames since its origins date from the biblical times. As far as my family knows - the Sitton family came to England from Toledo-Spain. Some of the family went to Greece and Israel. The name Sitton is known as a very old family name. I FOUND A WEBSITE FOR THE SITTON CAFE IN PANAMA, THEY CAME TO ARGENTINA FROM ISERAL ON THE WEBSITE THEY HAVE A COMPLETE FAMILY HISTORY-VERY INFORMATIVE. Hello ... I knew part of the information below was in error because of a book I read many years ago. Anne SETTON (Ann SETON, Elizabeth Ann SETON, Elizabeth Ann SEATON) is not the only American (make that United States) Saint. St. Katharine Drexel is another U. S.-born. Others, while born elsewhere, were in service and interred here. Of course I won't include Saints born in the Americas. Here is an informative site: http://www.americansaints.homestead.com/ Just clarifying, clemi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Liz Boulais" <lizboulais@adelphia.net> To: <SUTTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 02, 2002 10:57 PM Subject: [SUTTON] Origins of Sitton Name > Here is what some people have written concerning the origins of the name > Sitton: > > > As far as I know, John Sitton (Sutton) arrived in Enfield, Ct. from > Aldeborough, England in > 1628 on the Dilligent (Dilligence?).
