Subject: Ancestors of Annie L. Sutton, b. 1830 I am just beginning to try to trace my Sutton line and I have almost no information to start with! Does anyone have any information on an Annie (Anna?) Louise (Louisa?) SUTTON, b. Feb. 21, 1830 (or maybe Nov. 27, 1830) and d. March 1, 1854? She could have been born in either Virginia or North Carolina -- or elsewhere!! She died, however, in Mississippi and is buried there in the Rodgers Cemetery located in the axis of Marshall, Tate, and DeSoto counties in north Mississippi. (It's way back in the boonies in a pasture and is almost inaccessible. However, I've been there and have seen and photographed her marker.) This cemetery is located about 40 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. It is a family cemetery with mostly Rodgers buried there. We have an old tintype identified as Betty SUTTON, sister to Annie SUTTON, and one identified as Lucy SUTTON, sister to Annie SUTTON. Annie SUTTON married Abner Leroy RODGERS (Rogers) on Sept. 18, 1851 in either Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee -- or N. Carolina or Virginia. We have no idea where they married, but A.L. Rodgers was born in Alabama -- we think. However, we do know their first child, Preston Walker RODGERS, was born in Tennessee in 1852, though we don't know what county or town. (He was my grandmother's father, so we have his information documented.) We think she had a second son, Page Pendleton Rodgers, who was born in Mississippi. Preston's death certificate does list SUTTON as as his mother's maiden name but states as "unknown" the place of her birth. According to our family history Annie L. SUTTON RODGERS died some months after her second child was born. Her husband remarried and my ancestor in that family (Preston RODGERS) left home as a pretty young man and apparently never knew any of his Sutton relatives. Does anyone know who Annie's parents were? Or any of her siblings? Or where she was born? I really would like to trace this line. Any help that anyone can provide certainly will be appreciated. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by mail at J.E. Mortimer, 116 Keestone Drive, Senatobia, MS 38668. My phone number is 662.562.4893. Thanks!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is probably the parents of your Annie Sutton. They had a daughter Lucy and a daughter named Ann S.(?). They were in Lauderdale County, TN in the 1850 census. There is no Betty, but maybe she already left the home at this time. Lucy was 23 and Ann was 18 in the 1850 census. Both girls were born in Va.
