Stamey Canton - Vertie Mae Sutton Stamey, 89, of Ferguson Street, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Ervin and Addie Smith Sutton. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Verndina Hayes; brothers, Waldo, Charlie, Norville and Jesse; and grandson, Adam Stamey. Mrs. Stamey was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, James Ray Stamey; three sons and their wives, Jerry R. and Barbara Stamey and Steve and Kathy Stamey, all of Canton, and Michael and Becky Stamey of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Mae Miney of Waynesville; one brother, Eugene Sutton of Waynesville; four grandchildren, Andrew, Ronnie, Derrick and Eric Stamey; and two great-granddaughters, Jordan and Katie Stamey. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. The Revs. Dennis Ruff and Darrell Webb will officiate. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons.
