Published in the Tonawanda, NY - News 30 January 1984 On Saturday, a 21-year old woman died along with her two young children, her sister and a neighbor when fire engulfed a three-story building in Walden, Orange County, officials said. Killed were Cindy Lewis; her daughter, Helen, 5; her son, Nelson, 2; her sister, Melinda Bates, 13, of Middletown; and Chris Sutton, 15, an occupant of the building. Cindy LewisÂ’ father, Melvin Bates, 48, was hospitalized with injuries he suffered leaping from the burning roof. About 100 firefighters were called, and three were treated for smoke inhalation.
