Published in the Emporia, KS - Gazette 12/27/04 Arline Etta Marcellus Sutton OTTAWA Native Emporian Arline Etta Marcellus Sutton, 84, of Ottawa died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at the Life Care Center in Burlington, where she lived since December 2003. Mrs. Sutton was a substitute teacher in the Miami County school district. She also was an artist. The daughter of Frank and Ruby Karns Marcellus, she was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Emporia. Her father was a Santa Fe section foreman and the family moved often. They were furnished a boxcar and later, a coach car for their home as they moved where the job was located and lived alongside the railroad tracks. They lived in Osage City for nine years. She graduated from Garnett High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia for two years and received a life certificate. She married V. Lowell Sutton on June 22, 1941, in Emporia. During World War II, she moved with her husband to different bases in the United States. After the war, they moved to Lawrence and to Paola in 1951. They moved to Salina in 1972, then to Overland Park and Ottawa in 1979. Mr. Sutton died Nov. 12, 2003. Mrs. Sutton was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. She was a member of the Osage County Art Guild and a charter member of the Ottawa Art Guild. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Sue Hills of Burlington, Sharon Jean Apperson of Overland Park and Ann L. Reeder of Frisco, Texas; a brother, Larry Marcellus of Manhatan; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington, where the family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Garnett Cemetery.
