    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Jacob, Lyman C., Lyman H., Harvey, Lemuel Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wkQBAIB/3334 Message Board Post: I was looking at the Rootsweb locality message board for Douglas County Minnesota, where my gr-gr-grandfather Lyman C. Sutton (b. 1819, Warren tsp Bradford Co, PA, m Jane Abigail Brooks, 1842 in NY d. 1906 Alexandria Douglas CoMN) lived much of his life with his family. I found the following transcribed news clipping from the local Alexandria newspaper, the Post News. In this posting was a somewhat gruesome account of Lyman C.’s brother Jacob’s death in 1894 at the hands of a disturbed son-in-law, in Grand Rapids Michigan. I have been looking for some information on Jacob Sutton for well over 15 years now. Lyman C. and Jane’s children included my gr-grandfather Lyman H. Sutton (b.1849NY- Cattaraugus Co / d.1920Alexandria, Douglas Co), his older brother Charles W. Sutton (b.abt 1844 Cattaraugus CoNY / d.1920 NewportWA or Oldtown ID -- they make up one town in two states), and sister Lucretia “Kitt”, (b.about 1846 d??). From… http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/localities.northam.usa.states.minnesota.counties.douglas/4193 It reads: ********* Post News, Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota Thursday, July 5, 1894, page 1, col. 5. MURDER AND SUICIDE. A Brother of L. C. Sutton and Mrs. Auxer, of Alexandria, Shot by His Son-in-law. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 16.—William Henshaw, a drunken painter, tried to kill his wife and children, fatally shot his father-in-law, Jacob Sutton, and then blew his own brains out. Mrs. Henshaw separated from her husband on account of cruel treatment a couple of years ago at Rock Island, Ill., and came here with her seven children. Henshaw followed her and has annoyed her more or less ever since. The above telegraphic item appeared in the PSOT NEWS of June 21 and was the first known by relatives in this village of this most foul murder. The victim, Jacob Sutton, was the brother of Mr. L. C. Sutton and Mrs. Auxer and the uncle of Messrs. C. W. and L. H. Sutton, who are residents of Alexandria and there are other relatives in this vicinity, Mrs. Huston being another sister. They have written to Grand Rapids for further information. Transcribed from microfilm copy of newspaper at Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, MN. ********* Does anyone have any information on Jacob Sutton or his family living in Grand Rapids in the 1890s, maybe before? Unfortunately we don’t have available the 1890 census records. But for 1880 there were the following Jacob Sutton’s, one in Saginaw MI, and One in Chatham, Sangamon, Illinois that seem to be about the right age. None in Grand Rapids are on the index. And, either of these might be the Jacob I’m looking for. Name: Jacob R. Sutton // Age: 59 // Est birth year: abt 1821 // Birthplace: New York Occupation: Boot Maker Relationship to head-of-household: Self Home in 1880: Chatham, Sangamon, Illinois Marital status: Married // Spouse's name: Mary A. Sutton Race: White // Gender: Male Father's birthplace: NY /// Mother's birthplace:NY Name: Jacob Sutton // Age: 59 // Est birth year: abt 1821 // Birthplace:New York Occupation: Works In Salt Block Relationship to head-of-household: Self Home in 1880: Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan Marital status: Married // Spouse's name: Amanda Sutton Race: White // Gender: Male Father's birthplace: NY // Mother's birthplace: NY Jacob, also had, besides my gr-gr-grandgather Lyman C. Sutton, two other brothers, Robert, and Harvey. Like Jacob, I have not been able to find anything on Robert, who I think was older than Lyman, and therefore probably born around 1817 or so. I suspect he died young, but don't know. I had though Jacob did as well. There were eight sisters. Harvey was born in New York, probably in Oneida County NY in say 1831, as I recall from looking at census documents. They lived in Ontario Wayne County NY from the early 1830s until 1842, then moved to Otto, Cattaraugus County NY. Lyman C. Sutton, Harvey Sutton, and their father Lemuel (b. 1796 Rhode Island, d. after 1850 where??) and mother Deborah (Laughlin) Sutton are on the 1850 Census for that town, along with cousin Charles C. Sutton (b. 1799 Rhode Island / d. 1856 Jackson Co IA). Lyman C. Sutton, and Harvey moved to Canton, on the border of Jones and Jackson Co. Iowa in 1851 or 1852 along with cousin Charles C. Sutton. Then Lyman C. and entire family (with wife Jane Abigail Brooks b. 1823) move to Hamilton, Sumner tsp, Fillmore Co. MN in 1853, and then to Alexandria MN in 1868. Harvey Sutton shows up in Chickasaw Co Iowa in 1870 or 1880. Charles C. Sutton and wife Rosella (b. in Rhode Island), stay in Jones and Jackson County. Charles C. dies in 1856. Does anyone have anything reasonably certainly connected to the above information on Jacob? I know nothing else about Jacob, nor his daughter Mrs. Henshaw, except that she had lived in Rock Island Il, not even her first name.
