Surnames: Sutton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wkQBAIB/3266.1.1 Message Board Post: Below are some old postings from RootsWeb that I kept because they sounded like my family, but I never made a connection. It mentions Ezells, so it may be helpful to you. When it comes to genealogy, I'm a packrat! Hi, My interest in the Sutton family came about 25 years ago as I started on my adventure tracing my fathers family. The Ezell-Ezzells one of the earliest colonist from England to Va in the 1600’s. Many of these old Va familes went by wagon train as they called them to the area of S.E N.C mainly New Hanover, Sampson Duplin, Bladen, Onslow and Cumberland. It was one of the best soils for crops and still is today. It was also good for tobacco products and a specific kind of grape only grown in this area in the U.S.A florished there. Many moved here and stayed. The great amt of people from Ga, Al, Miss, La Fla, Texas cam from this region. My Michael Ezell born @1728 had a daughter Elizabeth born @ 1760 in Va married Elias Sutton in N.C sometime @ 1785. In the year 1783 Mikel and family left Mecklingburg Va and came to Duplin Co N.C. Sampson Co was part of Duplin. Bladen and New Hanover at this time. Mikel was born in Old Surry Co Va. Now Elias and Elizabeth Ezell Sutton! had 10 children. One moved to Ark in 1832, Elias Jr. Michale moved in 1850 to Ga but died in Ga. The rest stayed in N.C exception one girl. Elizabeth and Elias Sr had a daughter Sarah born @ 1815 who may have been the Sara Sutton from Sampson Co who married Parham Ezell her first cousin. There is no 100% proof but all indications point to it. They left in 1846 for Ga and then on to Al. Sometime between 1850-1860 Parham moved family to Jefferson Co Miss. Sometime between these years Sara died--unknown if in Miss or Al as he married in 1859 in Miss. Later in years after 1780 he moved onto Wisner La and died there and is buried there. Now this took me in to finding Sutton info and I run off what I find. I may not get all this finished but I am going so far and you can read it and then decide if you our connected to these Suttons which in more probablity then not you our. Back in the 1780"s a Asa Sutton witnessed a will for a Ezell. He either died or went on elsewhere as he me! rely just dissapears. There were loads of stories passed down back in those early era"s that had very little truth ot were deeply exagerated. Some were true but not all. Thelma Ezell Peters Hi , In looking on info the William C. Sutton and John Sutton were children of Thomas Sutton and moved to Miss. I also find Sampson Co Court minutes as Nov 1846 Committee to audit and settle A/C between Bryan Daughtry exr of Joseph Sutton dec and William Wilson adm of Thomas Sutton. I have a feeling this Thomas had a lot of decendents. This is just what I am picking up on at this minutes. Thelma Peters. Yes, These people in those years did not stay in one place very long. They moved on for land grants and that is why they ended up in Miss. The area of Duplin and Sampson even Bladen was full of Suttons and they were there very early in the !700"s. This area was one of the most hotspots to go. What year first find them in Miss and which ones. Thelma ----- Original Message ----- Hi, I backed up to Roots-Web to check the years you have these people in Miss. I see it is in the 1850"s. From the dec of Thomas Sutton some were out of state before his death and I have no idea what year. You need to know who was the earliest you can find who were your decendents. The Carrolls were in Duplin-Sampson Co in the 1700"s also. Many stayed , but many left. I can find all these old names in these counties who have family members who left between 1830-1850 for all these Southern States. Some went west to Tenn and Ky but no that many. N.C was the main route. Thelma

I too am trying to find out about my Sutton heritage. I'm almost postive that my GGGrandfather was Elias Sutton Jr born in NC (poss Pitt or Sampson CO) around 1803. He was the son of Elias Sutton Sr and Elizabeth Ezell Sutton. Elias married Edith Bryant and had three children. Martin Vanburen Sutton (my GGrandfather), Mary and Susan. Mary married John Wise (from LA) and had a number of children, don't know about Susan. Elias Sutton Jr left NC around 1840 and I know nothing about the family between that time and 1859 when they showed up in Columbia County, AR. That's where Martin met and married my GGrandmother Alcey Elizabeth Britt. I've been told that the family had a sawmill somewhere around the Columbia County area but I've not been able to get that info. My GGrandfather Martin Vanburen Sutton was killed in the Civil War and my Grandmother was his only child. I think these families traveled together across country and maybe lived in GA and MS for a while ?? I think they were all related in some way. What do you think?

    1. RE: Johnson, Isaac, Stanstead Co.1825-1900
    2. Jim Sutton
    3. Bev: There were NO governmental BMD recordings in Quebec until some time after 1900. All (100%) BMDs were recorded in CHURCH RECORDS. So you HAVE to KNOW the religion of your ancestor. If they were Protestant, for Barnston, that is likely the Hatley Anglican church whose records are now available through the Anglican Church in Coaticook, PQ. Coaticook, Hatley and Barston are closely situated nearby towns. The Anglican church in Coaticook is active and has a priest. Most church records of this period have been collected by the National Archives of Quebec; there is a branch in a nearby town to the north whose name escapes me now (I think it's SHERBROOKE). I've personally research in both places on genealogy research trips there. Good news, the National Archives will conduct searches of their records via mail correspondence. So if you can collect all your information to make a good query, they'll work with you. There are also BMD collections kept at the Archives Nationales du Quebec. The Records Office in Stanstead is another possibility - it contains detailed records mostly of real estate transactions but many things work their way in over the years. You'll have to research there in person or hire someone. The period before 1830s is really hit or miss because the townships were newly opened to land grant settlers. Records are lost or transferred, not centrally organized, etc. Hope that helps. Jim PS The Records Office in Stanstead is another possibility - it contains detailed records mostly of real estate transactions but many things work their way in over the years. You'll have to research there in person or hire someone. PPS There is a website run by a Quebec woman genealogist or researcher who has made it her work to transcribe BMD records in the Eastern Townships. She charges for the search results but its worthwhile (obviously) if your name of interest appears. Search for Eastern Townships, transcripts, birth index etc in GOOGLE and you'll find her probably. -----Original Message----- From: Beverly Wesling [mailto:bwesling@msn.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 1:18 PM To: jsutton@sutton.org Subject: Johnson, Isaac, Stanstead Co.1825-1900 Am looking for my grandfather's birth certificate or some paper showing father and mother of Isaac who was born in Barnston, Que. 11 Sep.1811. 3. Do you happen to know anything more about John and Susannah's children? I'm wondering if their daughter Susan Eleanor Sutton is the one I'm looking for. If she married William J. Harris ~ 1883 in Jackson Co. Illinois and lived there, then it is the Susan I am looking for. Susan and William had several children together : Minnie, Philip, Mabel, Ethel, Pearl, Earl, Ray, and Teddie. Earl Harris is my grandfather. The only info I really have in regard to my greatgrandmother was that her name was Susan Sutton. Tami On 6/12/06, Kaye Strause <jkstraus@bellsouth.net> wrote: > > Judy and Liz > > I have a John D.
