Searchers of Sutton/Ellis/Patterson/Gard Here is # 3 of 4 newspaper articles (1st was Obit of Samuel Sutton) I found in my gg grandmother's trunk, Hannah Sutton Ellis. This is her brother. I do not know a date or the name of the newspaper for sure, I am assuming that this would be Bethany, Harrison Co., Missouri. I also do not know if he won the election. Thanks everyone, Vickie in OK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Newspaper Article, 1904 - Cypress Township - Missouri - Samuel Sutton A HAPPY REUNION On last Tuesday, Feb 23rd, the (?? Corner of article missing) at the residence of R. S. Ellis, in Cypress township, this county, the surviving brothers and sisters of the Sutton family. Uncle Samuel Sutton, who, with his aged wife (Mary G. Patterson), lives with their daughter Mrs. Hannah Ellis, is the oldest, being 88 years old. The other brothers present were Capt. Simeon Sutton of Bethany, and Harvey Sutton, of LaSalle County, ILLs. And Julia A Gard of Cypress township, this county, together with quite a number of children and others related to the different Sutton families. The above named brothers and sister are the survivors of a family of eleven children, all of whom lived to a good old age except one, Jacob Sutton, who died soon after the civil war ended, from exposure while serving in the Federal army. The combined ages of the three brothers and sister are 323 years, an average of 80 years and nine months. It was an affecting sight to see these old people living their lives over again the few short hours they were permitted to be together, as one brother had not been seen by the others for forty-four years. An enjoyable time was spent by all those present and after a bountiful repast was served, prepared by Mrs. Ellis as she knows well how to do a photographer appeared and photographed the venerable people and their descendants in several different groups. After which well wishes and hand shaking being over the friends and relatives began to leave for their homes. Among those present, besides those mentioned above, were: Mrs. Capt. Sutton, Mr. And Mrs. J H Sutton, and Mrs. W H Gillispie, of Bethany; W G Sutton, Rutland, Ill.; J P Sutton, Happy Valley, Mo; Dr. and Mrs. B M Sutton, Bridgeport, Mo; and Wm H Sutton and family, Cypress, MO. Hi Carol, Yes, they are related. Samuel is the son of George Sutton and Hannah Gard are your (? great) grandparents too. Which of Samuel's 11 siblings is your line? I have 3 other news articles and some Sutton pictures that I found in a trunk passed to me that belonged to my gg grandmother, Hannah Sutton Ellis married to Robert S. Ellis. I am aggressively pursuing my Ellis, Patterson and Gard line that is all connected to the Suttons. I have found just about everything a person could want on the Suttons at FamilySearch Ancestral File back to 1585. Thanks Carol for the Reply, Vickie in OK

Samuel and Mary G. Patterson Sutton and all the children ended up in Harrison County, Missouri. In the townships of Bethany and Cypress. I have two pictures of her at age 88 yrs. She was a very small very wrinkled woman always with a shawl pulled over her hair. Also a picture of someone that says "Grandmother Patterson" that I think is her mother. The woman in this picture looks like a big boned woman, with long arms and large hands, and her face is long in shape. I also have a picture that says "Cousin Andy Patterson" at middle age and I think a young picture of him in a civil war uniform. I am checking the civil war muster list for him. I also have this obit on Mary G Patterson's husband, Samuel Sutton ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Obituary - Samuel Sutton - 1906 - Original newspaper article Samuel Sutton was born in Butler (the corner of newspaper is torn off), Jan 6, 1816, and died at his home in Cypress township, Jan 19, 1906, aged 90 years and 13 days. He was taken when a small infant about 1 year old to Preble county, Ohio, where she grew to manhood, and took as his life partner to share his trials Mary G. Palluson (msp. should be Patterson) Jan 18,1838, who still survives him. Theirs was indeed a long eventful life which they lived together as man and wife, 68 years and 1 day. To this union were born 4 boys and two girls. One son and 1 daughter preceded him to the Great Beyond, both having lived to manhood and womanhood. The rest of the children all live not far from the old homestead. There are 15 grandchildren, 22 great grand children and 1 great great grand child, making the fifth generation. When 24 years old he cast his first presidential vote for the Whig candidate, William Henry Harrison and was always loyal from that time to the Republican party to the time of his death, having cast his last vote for Roosevelt in 1904. He was elected Justice of the Peace of Cypress township and filled the office for 16 consecutive years. He was also postmaster for 10 or 11 years and took great pleasure in being one of, if not the oldest postmaster in the United States. About two years ago he received a fall, which caused a fracture of the arm, and although he recovered the use of his arm he could not write very well, so this caused him to have to resign the office of postmaster, but he still continued to enjoy his paper, having received the gift of second eyesight and was able to read without having to wear glasses. "Uncle Sammy", as everyone called him, came to Harrison County in 1865, about the close of the Civil War. He lived on the same place until the time of his death. Though not confined to his bed he had been in quite poor health for some time, and about 13 years ago his daughter and her husband (Mr. And Mrs. Robert Ellis) came back to take care of her father and mother during their declining days. He was always cheerful and pleasant and during his last sickness he was surrounded by children and grandchildren and an aged sister and brother, to administer to his last earthly wants. He will be greatly missed from his favorite chair by children and grand children, but by none as, much as his aged companion and his devoted daughter Mrs. Ellis, who were always ready and willing to wait on "father". Funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Smiley, assisted by Rev. Mitchell at Pleasant Ridge church to a large gathering of relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in Pleasant Ridge cemetery. ******************END & SNIPPED BY CAROL********************

Something to share: Richland Co., Wisconsin History, Chapter 17 Murder of Benjamin Sutton. This was the next crime of importance committed in Richland county. Benjamin Sutton, was an elderly man, but recently returned from the seat of the "war between the States," then raging, having been a member of the 11th regiment of Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He was engaged in keeping in a small grocery or saloon at Port Andrew, in Richwood township, and while engaged in sweeping off the sidewalk in front of his place of business, about 8 o'clock, on the morning of the 4th of December, 1862, was shot by an assassin with a rifle. It seems, from the evidence in the case, that Milton Hubanks had a quarrel with Sutton, said to have grown out of the treatment of Sutton's daughter by Hubanks, and out of this had sprung up a deadly feud, and Sutton had made many threats to shoot Hubanks on sight. On the morning in question, the latter concealed himself in the house of James Haney, within six or eight rods from Sutton's place, and locating himself near a window overlooking the door of that person's place, loaded his rifle with the intention of shooting him. It has been urged in extenuation that he was goaded on to this act by the threats of his enemy and the advice of some friends, on whom he relied, but whose warmth of feeling had warped their judgment. Here at the window, he waited until the old man made his appearance, and then deliberately taking aim shot him down, the ball passing through the abdomen, making a fatal wound. Sutton fell to the ground, and while lying there the dastardly assassin again shot him; this time the ball passing through the arm and entering the breast of his victim. Sutton lingered in great agony for some hours, in spite of the strong efforts of Dr. R M Miller to alleviate the pain, and died before the following morning. Hubanks was arrested and brought before a jury and they adjudging him guilty of manslaughter only, on account of the extenuating circumstances, he was sentenced for a term of four years to the penitentiary. After serving two years he was pardoned.
