Published in the Asheville, NC - Citizen-Times June 10, 2002 LUCY H. SUTTON CANDLER - Lucy Geneva Hunter Sutton, 72, of 595 Milk Sick Cove Road, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Sutton was born in Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Jarvis and Katherine Connard Hunter. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Franklin and Helen Goforth. She was retired from American Enka. She is survived by her husband, Lawrence H. Sutton; four daughters, Elizabeth Brocklesby, Brenda Norman, Robin Denning and Sandra Gragg; four sisters, Leona Burrell, Ruth Ballew, Viola Hunter and Voneta Stillwell; one brother, Doug Hunter; 12 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. The graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pisgah View Memorial Park with the Rev. Charlie Sams officiating. Her family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Camille is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Amerigo, and son John. She was loved and will be missed by sons, Michael (Barbara), Patrick (Mary Ann), Brian (Peggy); daughter-in-law, Rita Pierotti; brother, Ralph Sutton; sister-in-law, Bernice Sutton; five grandchildren: Angela, Annette, Tony, Gina, and Holly; three great-granddaughters, and numerous nieces and nephews. I have done a little more research on my lines and have found that my James Sutton is from Canada (French). Born around 1845. His marriage record does not list his parents. I am looking for census data from the French areas of Canada (probably Quebec) in 1861, but there aren't any good indexes. I have started with a few counties/districts, but no luck. I know he is in INDIANA in 1870. I am also looking for naturalization records, but no luck there either. ANY info would be highly appreciated. I have been to the ACPL lately and will try to post other findings which may be helpful to other SUTTON researchers in the near future.

I've noticed you claim Harriet Jane Doty-Sutton-Robinson as your great-grandmother. This probably makes us about 4th cousins, once removed. I'm descended from Jacob Sutton & Abigail Doty (daughter of John Doty & Elizabeth Wilson). As far as I can tell, most of the Suttons in White River Twp are descended from 2 brothers; Jacob (1802-1882) and Isaac (1805-1869), sons of James Sutton & Elizabeth Bell of Ohio. The Dotys are a little harder to sort out. It looks like Joshua Doty (1801-1870) and John Doty (1777-1856) arrived in White River Twp independently. They are 3rd cousins, once removed; but I wonder if they knew one another or knew of their relationship. Do you have any information on how these families camr to be in Johnson County? I'm working real hard on sorting out the Suttons & Dotys, using primarily census and cemetery records. I would love to swap information with you somewhere along the line.
