Emma Anne Preston m. George S. Sutton December 02,1883 in Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, Kansas George was a Detective with Leavenworth City. Emma was 17 and George was 32. Had been previously married so Emma had a step son Henry living with them. Later they had two children Nellie Mae (My husband maternal Grandmother) and a son Roy/Rey hard to read Census. Sadly George died from injuries from trying to arrest a soldier/June 1898 and Emma died Dec 1899. Left two children orphaned. 1900 Census for Leavenworth listed the two Sutton children with Agee Family and they are listed as step grandchildren. We know Nancy Preston married a Fitch in Tn. Then after He died she married Fred Agee. So we know Nancy from the Preston side. What we don't know is George S. Sutton back ground. Not having a 1890 Census cannot even confirm where He was born. The obit in Leavenworth times was more about his police work etc. Also that He left three children Perhaps someone will remember a family member being a Detective in Kansas. Since we have seen so many George Sutton names. In the obit it said He had been in Leavenworth 25 years so roughly would put him there by 1873. Any suggestions appreciated. We are guessing circa 1843 for a birth?? Thank you. The Muckey Family

Looking for ancestry of Thomas SUTTON b. 1780/1790 in Virginia(?). Migrated to KY where he married Nancy MITCHELL. Served in war of 1812. Died in Allen Co. KY in 1844. Any help would be appreciated. Carol
Thomas Sutton born about 1795 died Oct. 24, 1830 of a fever & Phebe Humphrey born 1803 were my GG Grandfather & Grandmother. They married Nov. 18, 1820. They had three sons, Thomas, John & Stephen plus I think two girls. This is all in Jefferson County Ms. My grandfather was named Stephen McKinley Sutton. Seems the first Stephen died at an early age. His death was announced in a club he belonged to in Fayette, Mississippi. Phebe remarried a man named Nutter Murphy and they all later moved to Louisiana. John married Mary Carroll who's father John Carroll fought in the battle of New Orleans. I have a copy of John Carroll's obituary stating he served his country in the battle of New Orleans and his God as a preacher at Hickory Springs Methodist Church in Jackson Parish, La. for many years. John and Senica are buried at Hickory Springs. The rest of family later moved to Bienville Parish La. John died about 5 years after returning from Civil War. John & Mary Carroll's children were Emily Jane Sutton, Henry S. Sutton, Senica Sutton, Jackson Whitfield Sutton, George Washington Sutton, Charles B. (Doc) Sutton, John Ervin Sutton. I was named after John Ervin Sutton & Charles B. (Doc) Sutton who died at 17 and 19. One fell off of horse and it broke his neck the other my uncle Henry said was a fighter that someone hit him over the head with a club. John Sutton was captured in the battle of Irish Bend just out of Franklin, La. April 14, 1863. Thomas was killed in the first attack on Gen. Banks troops by General. Richard Taylor April 8, 1864 in the battle of Mansfield, La. Both John & Thomas served under Gray from Bienville Parish. Richard Taylor, son of Zachary Taylor was over all troops in La. at the time. Hope this helps. I have much more if any of this fits. Did this in a hurry so pardon the mistakes. Charles Irvin Sutton

William Sutton died in Warren County, NC. His widow Elizabeth Jackson later was in Wilkes County Ga. William had children named Moses, John and Nancy. John Sutton married Mary Hay in Ga. I have had no luck in trying to find the brothers and sisters of William. I do have a copy of the will of Moses Sutton and it lists his children. I had found William and a John is close proximity to one another, but there are so many John Suttons. I will have to look into my info on what I have on James. I believe Moses was earlier married to Dolly Palmer. The name of David Palmer is a witness to will of Moses. There is a record of a James Sutton, son of Moses, who married Mary Cundiff and the security of this marriage is Abner Palmer. This record is in Lancaster County in 1792. There is a record of Winifred Cundiff in 1787 marrying Samuel Sutton. There is a Samuel Sutton son of John Sutton and Elizabeth Lunceford. I believe this John to be the son of Richard Sutton of Northumberland who died in 1702. Along with the names of Richard Sutton is the name of Dennis Conway as a witness to Richard's will, of which I have a copy. I have found the name of Conway and Sutton together is several places as early as 1623. I have no proof of any connection, but feel strongly that there must be one. Eager to hear any feed back and also to compare any notes you will share. I will be happy to supply copy of what I have put together. My Suttons from William who died in 1789 are then John who married Mary Hay, then his son William who married Sarah Higginbotham and at that point were in North Louiisiana. Of note other names in my research are Issac Sutton, Issac Bayse, Elizabeth Pope. The mother of Mary Hay who married John Sutton traces back to the name of Pope and there are connections back to Isle of Wight with the name of Bennett and others. Maybe all of this is too confusing. Please share names you know of in ancestry of James to see if any seem common to my research. Thanks so much for the reply. Billie Sutton Smith
Charles Irvin Sutton - You wrote that your Great-grandfather was a John Sutton from Mississippi. I am trying to trace a John H. Sutton, born July 16, 1816, my GG Grandfather, back to his parents (probably from Mississippi). John H. was twice married; he settlled in Avoyelles Parish, LA where he raised nine children: Eliska, John, Addie, Kate, Anna, William D., Emma, Lizzie and Stella, born between 1851 and 1870. Do you have any information about two sons, John and Thomas, of Thomas and Phebe Humphrey Sutton of Jefferson County, MS, who may have moved to Louisiana in the 1840's? Barbara Leder
My ancestor William Sutton died in 1799. He was married to Elizabeth Jackson. His father was Moses Sutton who apparently was married more than once and he had brothers named John, Thomas, Richard, and James. Moses, I believe to be the son of a Lazarus Sutton whose wife was Elizabeth. Moses last wife was a Caty Pittman. I have found info on Caty Pittman and a John Sutton after Moses death in 1796. The research of others tie this Moses to Richard Sutton who died in Northumberland Va in 1702. Does any of this seem to tie to your research. I would love to share more info with you and learn more of your info on the Sutton family. Please email me directly.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wkQBAIB/1343.1354 Message Board Post: John Sutton was born April 2, 1732 and died in 1832. He is buried at the Old Savanah Cemetery in Jackson County North Carolina, not Jackson TN. The story of his death is as follows and is recorded as follows in the Jackson County Court house. " One day in 1832, John was standing just below his house with some other men, when one of them said that John could jump the rail fence in front of them flat footed. Well, he did jump it flat footed.About that time someone rode up on an old plug horse. Someone in the crowd said I'll bet Uncle John can jump that horse. Well, he just backed up about two steps and jumped that horse. When he hit the ground he was dead." This info is from Millie Sutton Painter's research. She said that this is exactly how they have his death recorded in the Jackson Co. Court House in Sylva, NC. I really don't know anything more on Aggie Lossiah either. My grandmother had wrote in her bible that John came from Rockinghamshire, England, but I don't know wher! e she got that from. John had a brother, Thomas William Sutton, he went to Alamance Co. after the war and another brother that was injured at Old Fort and left on his own, I don't know what his name was. They all fought in the Revolutionary War. I found on another genforum that Aggie was born in 1783 and that she was 19 when she married John in 1802, he was 72. After he died she married John Quilliams in 1835 in Cocke Co. TN. After that they think that she married Russell Parton. Hope this can be of some help. I am a descendant of Mitchell Sutton, son of John Sutton b. 4-2-1732.
Charles: Thanks for thge reply.Since you are from the south, your Suttons probably came from England. It seems so far as I can see, that theEnglish Protestant Suttons went south, and the Irish Catholics went north. Why that would be stumps me. Hope you find all that you are searching for as well. Thom: I do not have the information you need but am amazed at the John and Thomas names in the Sutton family. My great grandfather from Mississippi was John, his brother was Thomas. Thomas was killed in the battle of Mansfield, Louisiana in Civil War. Probably on April 8th 1864 since his Company with Gen. Gray under Richard Taylor made the first attack on Gen. Banks that day. These names have really spread since then. I was named Charles Irvin Sutton after the two sons born after John returned from Civil War. They died at 17 and 19. One was hit over the head with a club, the other fell from his horse and it broke his neck. John had several older children. One my grandfather. Good Luck Charles Irvin Sutton

All: I am looking for ancestral proof of decendancy. I have the names and dates of my ancestors, but I am looking for the 'proofs' in order to qualify for membership in the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. The known genealogy is this; it is available from the LDS Website: My g-g-grandfather was Joseph Ratikin Sutton, who married my g-g-grandmother Mary Minerva Cox. I have a copy (albeit very poor) of the Family Bible marriage and birth pages. (Anyone know where this Bible is?) (By the way, my g-grandfather W.T Sutton and his brother Joseph Martin all served in the Confederacy. I have copies of their CSA service records I would be glad to share via e-mail if anyone wants. Please e-mail me separately at banjopicker66 at hotmail dot com.) Mary Minerva's younger brother was Nicholas Nichols Cox. Their parents were Caleb and Nancey Cox. Nicholas Cox served as a Colonel in the CSA, commanding the 10th Tennesse cavalry. The crux: I am looking for 'proof' that Nicholas and Mary were siblings. I would like to obtain records showing 1. Marriage of Caleb and Nancey 2. Births of Mary and Nicholas Can anyone help? I remain In His Service, For the Cause John M. Sutton Is he a fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose?
