My John was born late 1780's or early 1790's. Unfortunately I have almost no information on him. I only know that he existed, married in 1809 in Kentucky, settled in 1816 as an original land owner in Lawrence County, Indiana and served as a constable there for a while. He was in the 1830 census but apparently died shortly thereafter. I actually can't even prove he was the father of my ancestor (Ari Sutton 1826-1906), can only go on what others have told me. There apparently was not a will and I can't find burial info for either John or his wife Rachel. I haven't gone into too much on the siblings of my ancestor and have no idea how my ancestor wound up in Montgomery County, Indiana, where he married in 1849 (although I do know that he was born in Lawrence County). John did supposedly come from North Carolina but I have no idea where. Going on the idea that John and his wife seemed to follow the traditional naming pattern with their children I think I narrowed down about a dozen families from the 1790 census that could have been John's family (theoretically) but I never followed up on them, it was too difficult to say "this Benjamin had young children at the time so he could be John's father but this other Benjamin didn't so he can't be... but which is which?" When I very first started genealogy the Sutton family was my first major discovery... and I haven't made a discovery on that line since! Maybe someday! If this sounds familiar to anyone I would love to hear from you! > Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2004 08:52:57 EDT > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [SUTTON] John Sutton Bible > > My ancestor William Sutton had a brother John. Janie, Welcome to our family tree.........we are distant kin........ You are right, Anna L. Sutton married Abner L. Rodgers on Sept 21, 1851 in Lauderdale County, TN...........this is really interesting.......and that she named her last son Page Pendleton Rodgers........we are definitely kin!!! Marsha Maybe I do have some information that would be of interest to you -- and I thought I knew nothing about my Suttons. You know, you wrote her midle name as "Lewis," which triggered something. I looked again at her son's death certificate and on the line for his mother's name, her name is written Lewis Sutton. Hmmm. And, as I look at some notes my mother wrote years ago, she has her name as Annie Louis Sutton. (Basically hte same name, really.) Anyway. Her mother is where she got the name for her second son -- Page Pendleton Rodgers!! It sounded like a family name, but we had no idea from where. Now I know!! This is the son from whose birth she did not recover. He was born in Nov. of 1853 and she died March 1, 1854 -- at least according to our information. She died in what is now Tate County, Mississippi, but was then DeSoto County, Mississippi, and is buried in a small family (Rodgers family) cemetery in a pasture out in the middle of nowhere. (I have been there, though, and have seen her marker. It is a large obelisk and says she was the wife of A.L. Rodgers.) Oh, actually I'm looking at something I got from a Google search that has Annie L. Sutton as being born 2/21/1830 and dying on 3/1/1854. (It's cemetery information that lists her in the Rodgers Cemetery here in Tate County and as wife of Abner L. Rodgers. Don't know the source for that info, though.) I think Ann married Abner Leroy Rodgers in Tennessee, possibly Lauderdale County, in 1850 or 1851. (The dates are according to some of my mother's notes.) Ann's husband was born in Alabama about 1818 and she was apparently born in Virginia. Perhaps both families went to Tennessee and they met there? Their first son, Preston Walker Rodgers, was born in Tennessee. (He was my great grandfather.) But now I'm realizing that the ancestry.com note you (or someone) sent me has her marrying Abner in 1855. Could that date be wrong? All the info that you provided in the e-mail I'm responding to here works for a marriage in 1850 or 1851 and the names work to be my ancestors. Since I know nothing further back than Ann herself, you can probably tell better than I if this is my Ann. The birth year is about right and a couple of siblings are correct. We probably just weren't aware of all of her siblings since she died when my great grandfather was a boy and he apparently knew nothing about her other than that she was born in Virginia. The name of the mother of your Ann Sutton just really makes me think this is my Ann Sutton, too. What do you think? Thanks!!!! This is getting good. jm (Janie)

JM, I do not know anything abt descendants of Ann Lewis Sutton. Ann was born 1832 in VA. She was 18 on the 1850 census, that is where I deducted the birth yr of 1832. We all know tho' that the dates on the census are not always correct.......She was the dau of John Carter Sutton and his second wife, Elizabeth Page Pendleton. I have no idea when she died or where...... Do you know where your Anna L. Sutton married? Who did she marry? and where? It could be the same Ann but I'm not sure......you said that she died young, how young? Where? The earliest Sutton in this Ann Lewis Sutton's family is John Sutton born 1688 in VA. Do you think this could be your Ann? Marsha Thank you so much for responding to my query. Genealogy folks are just so much fun -- and so nice to share information!! The below could be Anna's parents, except that Anna was born 1830 and it looks like this Norborne Sutton was born 1822 -- unless I'm reading this incorrectly, which is entirely possible. Maybe Ann was Ann Elizabeth and they called her Betty as a nickname? We always were told Anna was born in Virginia. Do you know any other information about them -- like their profession, etc.? Who was the first Sutton in Anna's direct anecestry to come to America? Are there any published (self-published or otherwise) books, booklets on this family line that I could acquire? Yeah, I'm full of questions and want to know more, more, more about this line of my family. It is pretty much a blank for us. My other family lines are all traced back to the "home" country and I'd love to do that with the Sutton line. I'm just sorry that Anna died so young so that our Sutton acquaintance was brief. (I think my grandmother said that her father said he never knew any of his mother's people.) I really would like to find out about her siblings' descendants. Do you have that info? I'm glad that we know where she is buried because she is so far (for that time period) from her family. If I go to Lauderale Co., would I be able to find much information about the Suttons there? If so, would that be at the library, a museum, or maybe a genealogy room? What other counties or towns or communities are important to this Sutton history? You just don't know how excited I am about this information! Again, thank you so much, Marsha. If you still live around the area, I'd love to meet you and visit with you. We spent three days going back into the woods to churches, old family cemeteries, house sites, etc. It was great!! I don't want to bother you too much with this and all my questions, but I truly, truly appreciate your help. Thank you again and I hope that we keep in touch. jm
Norborne was her brother. Marsha Sorry. I should have looked down the entire list of e-mails before I e-mailed you just a second ago. But is the 1822 eby right for Anna's father if she was born in 1830? Her father would have been 8 when she was born. Anna certainly could have been born between Lucy and Ann. Is there a library or genealogical room that would have pictures, etc., of these people somewhere? What cities/towns are in Lauderdale, TN? I'm in north Mississippi, so a trip up there certainly would be possible. Do you live in Lauderdale, too? Maybe Ann was Ann Elizabeth and they called her Betty? Just a wild thought. Happened in my family. Thank you, again, for your information. Would you mind if I keep in touch as I go through this research? Thanks. jm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggy Clark (preddie)" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2004 8:28 AM Subject: Re: [SUTTON] Fw: Ancestors of Annie L. If the below turns out to be your family, they are are in my tree and Lauderdale Co TN is my home county. Be happy to help, if I could. Marsha This is probably the parents of your Annie Sutton. They had a daughter Lucy and a daughter named Ann S.(?). They were in Lauderdale County, TN in the 1850 census. There is no Betty, but maybe she already left the home at this time. Lucy was 23 and Ann was 18 in the 1850 census. Both girls were born in Va. Sutton was such a common name in England as was John. I also have a John Sutton of that era.

Subject: Ancestors of Annie L. Sutton, b. 1830 I am just beginning to try to trace my Sutton line and I have almost no information to start with! Does anyone have any information on an Annie (Anna?) Louise (Louisa?) SUTTON, b. Feb. 21, 1830 (or maybe Nov. 27, 1830) and d. March 1, 1854? She could have been born in either Virginia or North Carolina -- or elsewhere!! She died, however, in Mississippi and is buried there in the Rodgers Cemetery located in the axis of Marshall, Tate, and DeSoto counties in north Mississippi. (It's way back in the boonies in a pasture and is almost inaccessible. However, I've been there and have seen and photographed her marker.) This cemetery is located about 40 miles southeast of Memphis, Tennessee. It is a family cemetery with mostly Rodgers buried there. We have an old tintype identified as Betty SUTTON, sister to Annie SUTTON, and one identified as Lucy SUTTON, sister to Annie SUTTON. Annie SUTTON married Abner Leroy RODGERS (Rogers) on Sept. 18, 1851 in either Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee -- or N. Carolina or Virginia. We have no idea where they married, but A.L. Rodgers was born in Alabama -- we think. However, we do know their first child, Preston Walker RODGERS, was born in Tennessee in 1852, though we don't know what county or town. (He was my grandmother's father, so we have his information documented.) We think she had a second son, Page Pendleton Rodgers, who was born in Mississippi. Preston's death certificate does list SUTTON as as his mother's maiden name but states as "unknown" the place of her birth. According to our family history Annie L. SUTTON RODGERS died some months after her second child was born. Her husband remarried and my ancestor in that family (Preston RODGERS) left home as a pretty young man and apparently never knew any of his Sutton relatives. Does anyone know who Annie's parents were? Or any of her siblings? Or where she was born? I really would like to trace this line. Any help that anyone can provide certainly will be appreciated. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by mail at J.E. Mortimer, 116 Keestone Drive, Senatobia, MS 38668. My phone number is 662.562.4893. I just wanted to let everyone know that I won the ebay purchase of the Bluegrass publication containing some info on Suttons. As soon as I receive this publication if it is okay with list owner I will put the info on this site. I am still searching for Revenny Sutton Middleton Craighead daughter of Dempsey Sutton. I am looking for information on the family of Ferdinand Sutton who was born in Ohio in approximately 1824 and later lived in Malden, IL and his first wife Nancy, also born in Ohio in about 1838. He apparently had a brother William, who was 7 years his junior and moved to Illinois from Ohio along with Ferdinand and their mother, Elizabeth. She was born Elizabeth Frazier (Frazer, Fraser, and Frasier are all possibilities as well) in approximately 1798 or 1799 in Culpeper, VA. There is a marriage record of a Noah Sutton and Elizabeth Frazer in Belmont, OH in 1820, but that is apparently not them, because some of my sources indicate that they both passed away within five years of that date, and I know that Elizabeth and family moved to Malden, IL in 1854. Elizabeth's husband apparently did not make the trip, though. Any help in adding to this information would be greatly appreciated.
Is there anyone who knows or has heardabout church records in the early 1800 s in Newery Pa,This must be where many of the early irish to that area went to church. Any information appreciated. Thom Sutton
