If you would like see how I connect to the Sutton line you can by using the link below. It will take you to Sarah Caroline Sheets who was my great grandmother. Her mother was the first Sutton in my direct line. This line of Sutton's is from my mother's side of the family. I do have connections to the Sutton's from my father's side of the family but not in my direct line. Eljah Sutton a grtx uncle (the brother of James Dozier Sutton who is my direct line) was married to a Cherokee name Elizabeth Ward. I am related to Elizabeth through my father's Cherokee family. Therefore, related to those Sutton descendents through my father & mother's family. I have suspected that Elijah may have been part Cherokee. I would have to find my notes to remind how I came to that conculsion..seems like his children's degree (Cherokee) of blood was showing more then Elizabeth's? http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sandrahunter1&id=I28094

Hi: I've come across a piece of info which may be of interest to those who descend from George Sutton and Sarah Tilden. I am not one of them but descend from several other Sutton families in Kent England which is where George Sutton is thought to have been born. Many researchers give George's place of birth as Tenterden (some list a birth date of Apr. 12, 1613) which is where his wife Sarah was born and from whence her family emigrated to the USA via Sandwich in 1634. George Sutton accompanied the Tilden family as one of 7 servants but no baptism has been found for him at Tenterden or anywhere in Kent. The Kent FHS has published a collection of Parish Registers on CD-ROM02/03. Included on the CD are the parishes of Smarden 1539-1837 and Biddenden 1538-1877. These 3 entries found on the CD may be of interest. BIDDENDEN 1605 Oct. 13 Robert SUTTON married Mary Austen 1607 Dec. 20 George SUTTON alias Balduck son of Robert was baptised 1607 Dec. 27 George SUTTON son of Roberte was baptised SMARDEN 1607 Dec 20 George SUTTON son of Robert alias Balducke baptised Could this be the George Sutton who travelled to the USA with the Tilden family? Why does the baptism entry appear twice in the Biddenden PR (Dec 20 and Dec. 27) as well as the Smarden PR? It appears that Robert Sutton had at some point been known as Balduck (likely Baldock). Was he born with that name? Did he change his name from Baldock to Sutton? Since I have not seen the actual parish registers for Biddenden or Smarden I don't know for sure that the surname was Sutton. The typed transcripts on the CD could be wrong as reading the handwriting from this time period can be difficult. No other entries for the surname Sutton are listed in either of these PRs on the CD for this time period. Neither are there any Balduck/Baldock entries. I have no idea where Robert Baldock/Sutton was born nor where he and George went after 1607. They may have moved to another nearby parish. Note that Biddenden is the next parish to Tenterden and that Smarden is next to Biddenden. I hope no one will assume that this is the baptism of George Sutton of Scituate without further research in the parish registers. Anyone with access to an LDS Family History Centre can order in a microfilm of the parish registers or the Archdeacon's Transcripts for Biddenden which include the 1607 time period. They only have the Archdeacon's Transcripts for Smarden which includes 1607. The Archdeacon's Transcripts are a copy made from the parish register in the same year and sent to the Archdeacon. Hope that someone will find this info of interest. Much more research would have to be done to try to link this George Sutton or any other to the one in Scituate. Janis London, Ontario, Canada

I thought that maybe someone on the list could use this information. The local paper, "The Mount Vernon News" post a "from our files" section and this appeared in the 100 years ago section back on 9 Oct. 1992. This is a Knox County, Ohio newspaper. Sutton-Hancock Wedding--- J.E. Sutton of Centerburg and Nannie Hancock of Martinsburg were married Oct. 6 at the residence of J.G. Edelblute on Chestnut St., Mount Vernon. J.A. Barker officiated. I hope that someone can make a connection, I kept the clipping in case I ever found a link to my Sutton's. Good Luck!
