    1. Thurman Sutton and Harriet Rhoades
    2. Hermiller, Mary Louise
    3. Hi, Sutton cousins, Dave, you asked about Thurman Sutton and his wife Belle Rhoades. Peggy and Belinda have given you some help. I can add a little more. Belinda, on your web site you have: Children of Jacob Sutton & Mary Stone Ella b. 1855 Johnson Co, IN Thurman b. 1858 Johnson Co, IN m. 1879 Johnson Co, IN to Harriet Rhoades Willie b. 1864 Johnson Co, IN Eddie b. 1868 Johnson Co, IN I believe that Ella, Thurman, Willie, and Eddie were the children of Jacob’s older brother Daniel Sutton and his wife Mary A. Smith. This couple was married July 7, 1852. Partly responsible for the confusion is the U. S. Census itself: In the 1860 Census, Whiteriver Township, Johnson County, Indiana is this family: Sutton, Daniel, 25, born in Indiana, farmer Mary A., 25 Ella, 5 Thurman, 1 In the 1870 Census, same place: Sutton, Jacob, 35, born in Indiana, farmer Mary, 35 Ella, 15 Thurman, 12 Willie, 6 Eddie, 2 In the 1880 Census, same place: Sutton, Daniel, 45, born in Indiana, farmer Mary A., 45 William R., 16 Eddie, 13 Obviously this is the same family in all three censuses. But was Daniel or Jacob the head of household? A look at their birthdates solves the problem. Daniel was born November 21, 1834, so he was the head of household above; Jacob, Daniel’s younger brother, was born November 10, 1843, and so would have been only 12 years old when Ella was born. Both birthdates are from the Johnson County Historical Society Library, Franklin, Indiana. I have never found any children from Jacob’s marriage. Both he and his wife were still alive in 1910, and one of the bits of information in that particular census was a question asked of married women - how many children did you give birth to? and how many of those are still alive? When there were no children a zero was entered. What did Jacob’s wife Mary have next to her name? - no numeral, no zero, just blanks. Aargh! I have the following children for Thurman and Harriet A.: Maud P. Sutton, born February 10, 1883; lived ten hours. infant, born December 11, 1884. George Sutton, born September 1887. Bessie Sutton, born February 1890. Daniel Sutton, born March 1892. This may not be a complete list of Thurman’s children, just the ones I have found. Thurman’s brother William married Belle Rhoades (Harriet’s sister?). Children I have found for this couple: Harvey Sutton, born March 1884. Daisy Sutton, born November 9, 1892. Murray Sutton, born August 18, 1897. The Social Security Death Index gives his death date as September 1972, Polk County, Florida. Thurman’s brother Edward married Margaret Bradley. I have found one child (again there may be others): infant, born December 8, 1888. Daniel and Jacob’s parents were Isaac Alva Sutton and Mary Alice Watts, first cousins once removed. Isaac was born March 19, 1804, Preble County, Ohio; died February 18, 1869, Whiteriver Township, Johnson County, Indiana. Mary Alice was born December 18, 1807; died March 30, 1886, Johnson County. They were married July 26, 1825, Wayne County, Indiana. Both are buried in Lowe Cemetery in Whiteriver Township, Johnson County. Isaac Alva Sutton’s parents were James Sutton, Jr. (son of the Baptist minister Rev. James Sutton) and his first wife Elizabeth Bell. Dave - Thurman is your direct ancestor - would you give us more information about his descendants? Mary Lou Hermiller [email protected] (or preferred) [email protected]
