Hi Andy, Have you got a copy of the marriage cert? There is no guarnatee that what you see online is an exact transcription of the register. On FreeBMD Louisa has been recorded as Lorina Fanny Grinye(a)r Sep qtr Brighton vol 2b page 341 William John Clark may or may not be her actual father. There are a number of possibilities: 1. Louisa's mother remarried but Louisa did not take her step father's name 2. Louisa's mother did not marry William Clark but Louisa wanted to name him on the cert 3. Louisa was a widow - on FreeBMD there is a Lourina Fanny Cowdrey and a Benjamin Grinyer Sep qtr 1877 Brighton vol 2b page 294 4. Something even more complicated! My gx3 grandmother was not with her husband in 1841 but was apparently living with another man. She did not have his surname but her children did (they were not his children). Originally I thought that it was just a mistake on the census but the children subsequently seemed to swap between the surnames and some got married with their original name and others with the second man's name. My gx2 grandmother whilst using her original surname to marry named her father as a mixture of the second man's forename and her actual father's surname. Nightmare to trace. My ggrandfather on the other side was illegitimate, was given up by his mother to her brother and clearly regarded him as his father. Obviously the surname was not an issue but his real father was named on his birth cert. I think that you may have to invest in a few certificates to try and unravel this one. hth, Anne > From: andy701@blueyonder.co.uk > To: SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2013 12:20:28 +0100 > Subject: [SXP] Louisa Fanny GRINYER b1859 & Father William John CLARK > > Hi all > > Alfred HEDGECOCK marries Louisa Fanny GRINYER on 10th Jul 1881 at St Peter, Brighton.
