    3. Greetings Listers Chapter 7 of "The Smugglers" by Lord Teignmouth and Charles G Harper (published 1973) has this, among other things, to say about the Ruxley Gang in Hastings in the 18th century. Thirteen men were indicted in the Admiralty Court at the Old Bailey on Oct 30 1769 for piracy and murder on the high seas, namely: Thomas PHILLIPS, Elder and Younger, William & George PHILLIPS, Mark CHATFIELD,, Robert WEBB, Thomas & Samuel AILSBURY, James and Richard HYDE, William GEARY alias JUSTICE alias George WOOD, Thomas KNIGHT & William WENHAM and capitally convicted; of these, four - Thomas AILSBURY, William GEARY, William WENHAM & Richard HYDE - were hanged in the Tower of London at Execution Dock on Nov 27 1769. Thomas AILESBURY was the first husband of my 3 x ggm, Dorothy née PHILLIPS (who subsequently married Thomas DANIEL through whom I descend). I notice that there are four men named PHILLIPS - Thomas PHILLIPS the Elder, Thomas PHILLIPS the Younger, William PHILLIPS and George PHILLIPS. Can anyone help in finding out where these PHILLIPS guys fit into the large PHILLIPS family in Hastings please? Or where I should send an enquiry to find out more? Dorothy did have a brother called William (born 1732) but none called Thomas or George. The reference to Thomas Elder and Younger appears to indicate father and son, but not necessarily so. I'm wondering if any of these four is a fairly close relative of 3 x ggm Dorothy, given that her husband (Thomas Ailesbury) and possibly her brother-in-law (Samuel Ailesbury) were named. I've tried checking the Old Bailey records but with no success. Many thanks Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
