I see from <http://www.sussexias.co.uk/directories7-02.htm> that there were a vast range of directories published for Brighton and that most of them have copies in Brighton Reference Library (Local Studies section currently in Church Street). Land registration started in the north of Scotland and was only extended to the whole of the south of England around 25 years ago. And the electronic data is not held for before 1993.
