    3. It can take a bit of getting used to <g>. The site that Barbara mentioned is the James Gray site and there are actually 10 photos of The Den (40-49) http://regencysociety-jamesgray.com/volume26/source/jg_26_040.html Having had another look at the maps I think The Den had gone by 1972. It was definitely where Hazeldene Meads is now. Shame - it looked like a lovely house. > Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2013 19:35:21 +0000 > From: tim@powys.org > To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SXP] Where was The Den at Dyke Road, Patcham? > > On 7 Nov at 14:27, Anne Capewell <alc_goytre@hotmail.com> wrote: > >> Hi Tim, Go to www.old-maps.co.uk and find Hove. That land would have been worth far more to a builder just the same as loads of houses about here are 80 years old and are being knocked down and three or four tightly squeezed houses put into their places. Anything rather than dig up even more farmland. What is not clear is who built the The Den in 1884. In his last codicil to his will in 1889, my gggf says that he had recently bought the freehold house and lands, so I reckon he did not cause it to be built. The nursery that came with the house was let by him to a Mark Hazeldean; so his name survives in the name of the lane through the grounds: "Hazeldean Meads". Probably 'Meads' refers to the meadows used for nursery gardening. I wonder if Mark Hazeldean had originally owned all the land? Even more thanks for all this excellent information. -- Tim Powys-Lybbe tim@powys.org for a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org/

    3. According to the 1881 Deacons directory (from http://www.historicaldirectories.org) a Thomas Killick owned the Dyke Road Nursery. Is it possible that he had the house built on his land? I cannot find a Hazeldean (dene) in the same directory. If you could find an 1884/5 Kellys or similar it might tell you who was living there and they might be the ones who had it built. Alternatively would there be any land registry details anywhere? ---------------------------------------- > Date: Thu, 7 Nov 2013 23:34:47 +0000 > From: tim@powys.org > To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SXP] Where was The Den at Dyke Road, Patcham? > > On 7 Nov at 21:09, Anne Capewell <alc_goytre@hotmail.com> wrote: > >> It can take a bit of getting used to <g>. 1. [SXP] Where was The Den at Dyke Road, Patcham?

    3. If you go through the pictures on the Regency Society site - granted they must have been added after 1964 - but under image 43 it does say "built by Mr P.Lybbe" and later sold to.. Grenville. (top left of each picture there is a previous/next button) You say he "bought the freehold house and lands" THAT house - or a preceding house? - or did he mean he bought the freehold of the lands and had the house built? Have you thought of contacting the Regency Society and asking for any details they may have in their archives?.
