I've had a look at the scan of this census and it looks like it is a misrecording as the writing is very clear. This is definitely the couple who I suspected were his grandparents - many thanks for your help! No problem - Did the search using wildcard surname: "GOL*", always worth looking for misspelings, remember no standard spelling and people tended to spell as they said \ heard it - so add a strong acent and dropped letters and anything can appear on the paper. Absolutely - I'd already tried wildcard searches with Gold* expecting it maybe to find Goldie, Golden etc, but hadn't tried shortening it more.
