I have an marriage entry in the 1948 GRO index in which two surnames are shown for the wife. I assume this means that she has been married before. What I want to know is does the order in which the names are listed have any significance. In this case the entry reads "DREWETT or FOSTER". does this mean she was born a FOSTER and her first marriage was to a DREWETT or vice versa or can it be either. I can't seem to find the first marriage Jennie Tokoroa, NZ

I assume this means that she has been married Flawed assumption, I'm afraid. It /might/ mean that, but it's unlikely. All you can say is that, for whatever reason, the spouse was known by two surnames. To find out why would require further research. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" This disease is catching Into The Valley - Skids
