I am wondering if anyone can help me, please. I am trying to place a windmill on the river near Arundel. I have a watercolour painted by my greatgrandfather James Sturt dated 1873 of a view from the hills above Arundel showing the top of the castle and a windmill below it. Also I have found on the Sturt Family History website another painting by J.Sturt of a windmill close to a river. Does anyone have any old photos or information of a windmill near Arundel which may help me to establish where this windmill was. James Sturt (1806 - 1890) was born in Arundel and married Charlotte Mitchell in 1830. He was a carpenter and surveyor and when he died he left a number of properties some of which he built including some cottages in Warningcamp. Any help would be very much appreciated. Hi: Have you tried Googling Sussex Windmills - there's a South Marsh Mill, Arundel - a tower mill, now a private residence. Sorry, no more details. Cheers, Jean
Hi Ros, Look on www.old-maps.co.uk. Search for Arundel and the first map should be 1879. The windmill is a little to the south east of the town on the second river bend after the bridge. In 1879 it was still in use as a flour mill but by 1899 it was marked as disused. hth, Anne > From: ros.dunn@tiscali.co.uk> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Date: Sat, 1 Dec 2007 17:08:31 +0000> Subject: [SXP] Windmills, Arundel.> > I am wondering if anyone can help me, please.
