Hi, My Surrey GRANTHAM line seems likely to have originated from Sussex. Nationally it is not that common a name and there are only three main areas it occurs:- 1:- Lincs & Yorks where most GRANTHAMs can be found 2:- Bucks & Oxon 3:- Sussex & Surrey Looking at the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1524/5 for Sussex reveals that the GRANTHAMs were centred on villages around Amberley, i.e., West Burton, Bury, North Stoke, Wepham, Storrington, etc., and seem to have been husbandmen and servants. They look like they moved up to Horsham and beyond in the 1600s. My line seems to have reached Rudgwick in the late 1700s. Does anyone know anything about this family? It seems a long way to have come for someone from Grantham, Lincs in the 14th/15th century. Could it possibly be a distortion of another name? There is a place called Greatham near to Amberley; there is also a Graffham not too far away and the surname GRAFHAM does occur in the same places as GRANTHAM in Surrey. Many Thanks, Kong _________________________________________________________________ Free games, great prizes - get gaming at Gamesbox. http://www.searchgamesbox.com
