Hi Judy Look sometimes when you first get started you have to bite the bullet and buy a few certificates to get a handle on the family. Your family are 1940's to start.....SO You do not have census data to search. All you have is family history, Births deaths and marriages (certificates) and Parish registers and some other things ............depending SO 1. collect everything your family knows & remembers about the parents, grandparents....everything. 2. Order a few pertinent certificates. ON the freebmd sites at rootsweb www.rootsweb.com is a good place to start to learn where to start. You can search but it will cost to get a copy of he cetificate Hopefully (like me) you pay out for a few and then the research gets easier...... 3. Brown is a very common name, so.....you will need to cross reference the certificates with census data as you go back further. People with access to Ancestry.com will I am sure help you with that (on this list) You really need to get onto rootsweb and learn how to start ......there is not much on line except Births deaths and marriges for that time frame UNLESS you are lucky enough to find someone tracing the same family on a site like this Crikey hon.....there is so much we can tell you.... Get a handle on the family first and then get back to listers. Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hello List. > Started research for my children on the brown family.
