Hi everyone, Has anyone got George Goodman who married Edith Ann Burns (or Leversuch or Whickman depending on which documents you read) at Warblington, Hampshire on the 4 September 1911 on their tree? George could be George Henry or Henry George or even just plain George. Who ever said that family history was easy! According to their marriage certificate George’s father’s name was William. George and Edith lived at Stoughton, West Sussex after their marriage and their first child Arthur F Goodman was born at Walderton, Stoughton in 1912. Here I should add that I’ve searched the electoral rolls for 1910,1911 and 1912 with no result so can’t even get the 1911 census early by knowing their address. Any help in finding him would be so gratefully received. Thank you, Margett West Sussex
It is possible that George GOODMAN didn't have the financial qualification to appear on an Electoral Register circa 1911. It wasn't until the Representation of the People Act 1918 that all men over 21 had the unqualified right of Suffrage. So, if you were to check the 1919 Electoral Register, you may be able to find his address and hopefully it will be the same as that shown on his son's 1912 Birth Certificate. Of course there would still be no certainty that he would be at that address on 02 April 1911. The last I heard on the subject of the 1911 Census is that there will be a phased early release of the non-sensitive census data beginning next year and that the release will be on a geographic basis, beginning with the major conurbations. I haven't seen a detailed timetable by County so far, but hopefully one will be released in due course. Full release will be available on 01 Jan 2012. Have you tried looking at the problem from the other end? If I get stuck on the other events in a person's life, I sometimes find it helpful to go forward in time and find their death registration which should give either their reported age at death (from 1866 to 1969) or their reported date of birth (from 1969 to date), depending upon when they died. Once you have found the year of death, you could search for a Will and you often find that any confusion regarding the names that they used at various stages of their life was sorted out at Probate. Of course, once you have a better idea of when they were born, you can search for their birth registration and perhaps buy the Birth Certificate which should show the place of birth. Census searches to fill in the gaps then become that bit easier. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
