    3. Hello list, Not strictly Sussex, but famhist-related. I hope some knowledgeable person can help me out. I don't want to subscribe to another list for a one-off question. I have distantly related ancestors from Scotland 18th-19thC, and they seem to have a tradition of naming the children with the mother's maiden name as a second forename. Hence, for example, William Robertson married Martha McCreadie and their child was named James McCreadie Robertson. He remarried to (?) Orr and the children were named Agnes and Thomas Orr Robertson. So can anyone tell me whether this was common practice in Scotland (and/or perhaps Ireland, there are links) or was this just a family thing? It was used for four generations, dying out at the end of the 19thC. I would be most grateful if any lister could throw any light on the subject. Thanks in advance, Geoff
