    3. Would 7 Market Street, Hove (which I think was a boarding house) in 1843 show up as Market Street,Brighton on current maps? From a satellite image of 6-7 Market Street, Brighton it looks as if it is currently a small hotel/B&B. Is anyone familiar with this area and can tell me if it would be the original building or if the area has been redeveloped. Any assistance or advice appreciated. Thank you Ann Australia

    3. Hi Ann, If you look at www.old-maps.co.uk and www.streetmap.co.uk you can work out the location of Market Street on the Victorian maps. This is another good site http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__5996_path__0p115p210p703p.aspx. Or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_files/ENG/SSX/cooper_bton_1820.html - you should be able to save the image and enlarge it. If you search on The Lanes Brighton or Maps of Brighton you will find a fair amount online. Many of the buildings are old but have changed over the years. If I remember my local history correctly (bearing in mind this is many many years ago!!) the Lanes were created out of the 'laines' (or pathways) between the strips of land created by medieval strip farming - but don't quote me on that <g>. hth, Anne > From: barmenz@bigpond.net.au> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 09:22:44 +1000> Subject: [SXP] Hove/Brighton 1843> > Would 7 Market Street, Hove (which I think was a boarding house) in 1843> show up as Market Street,Brighton on current maps?
