Hi Mark I too am searching for ELPHICKs in Sussex I have a Madeline Lily ELPHICK that married a Walter William GREEN in Steyning in February 1920. Her father was listed on her marriage certificate as "Henry" but her birth certificate (she was born December 1890) has her father as Frederick Victor Joseph ELPHICK and her mother as Olive ELPHICK (formerly Alway). I have yet to find out anything about Olive. Her (half) brother, Frederick, is a witness to their marriage In the 1891 census there is another daughter listed with Frederick and Olive - Ethel age 3, and a "brother in law - Arthur Stockbridge, age 20. I have been unable to find out anything about either of these two individuals either. In the 1901 census, Frederick is now married to Edith (nee Coussens) and they have another child, Frederick age 2. Madeline (or Lily, as she was known by) is my husband's maternal grandmother (he was adopted from birth and does not know any of his family personally) Judy BC Canada > -------------------------------> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SUSSEX-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _________________________________________________________________
Judy, I don't have this family in my tree but have done some digging on ancetsry.com and have the following information: Frederick Victor Joseph Elphick was born in about 1867 in Udimore, Sussex. He was the son of Jospeh Elphick (b abt 1829 in Uckfield) and Emily Elphick (b abt 1835 in Croyden, Surrey). Ethel Elphick was born Ethel EM Elphick in Camberwell District in Jun Q 1888. She seems to have married ? Sibley in Sep Q 1915 in Brighton District. I can't find her in the 1901 census. I can't find a death for Olive. The only piece of information that I can find is that Olive was born in Tunbridge, Kent in abt 1868 (despite what the index on ancestry.co.uk states it is Tunbridge, not Sunbridge).
