This does not help you directly but may be of some interest I grew up in Hampshire, a village called Crawley 5 miles West of Winchester and went to the village school from 1947 to 1953. The school did not have a telephone, but the next door neighbours did. They were an older couple (probably then in their 50s or 60s - I speak as a Primary child!) and for urgent business, like when my 5 year old sister disappeared! we used their phone. He was Jack Northeast - a renowned local artist and I still have a book of Winchester views and historic descriptions illustrated by him. My mother was also painted by him, sitting in a chair wearing a long skirt and hair in an unfamiliar style, and I think my sister (same one) has that painting. He was also for a time on the governing body of the school - Crawley County Primary. I am not sure, I believe he may have taught at Winchester School of Art I would estimate his date of birth around 1900. (My sister had run away home and we could not get in touch because the phone number was being changed that very day. She was hiding behind the dropleaf table!) His wife MIGHT also have been called Eileen but I am not certain. Many thanks Jean. That is really interesting and I will pass on the info to my new cousin. His father was named Jack and I dont know much about him but my father was born 1903 so he could be related. I dont think its the same Jack though. Its quite exciting. The book must be quite rare because I cant find it mentioned on the internet or any mention of a local artist of his name.
