Hello list My 3 x great grandfather Richard Smith was born approximately 1797 to parents Richard and Elizabeth. My Richard married Lucy Piper nee Ransom at Hollington 10 July 1827 and then lived at Battle. With previous help from the list 3 marriages were found for a Richard Smith and Elizabeth. 1st - Richard to Elizabeth Banks 30 Sep 1787 at West Firle 2nd - Richard to Elizabeth Tipper 27 Jan 1791 at West Dean 3rd - Richard to Elizabeth Martin 17 Mar 1791 at Wadhurst. How can I determine which Richard and Elizabeth are the parents of my Richard? Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. With thanks Chris Randall
Hi Chris, Firstly I would look at where they were married. West Dean is in West Sussex near Chichester, West Firle is just to the east of Lewes in East Sussex and Wadhurst is south of Royal Tunbridge Wells so they are some distance apart from each other. Hollington is north west Hastings - so West Firle is the closest. Have a look at any baptisms - sometimes the mother's maiden name is recorded. Do you know any of Richard's siblings? If you're lucky he may appear with a sibling on a census - or Richard and Elizabeth may, although given their potential birth dates this is less likely. Hope someone else is researching the same family! hth, Anne > Date: Fri, 2 Sep 2011 20:34:58 +1000 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [SXP] Which Smith family? > > Hello list > > My 3 x great grandfather Richard Smith was born approximately 1797 to > parents Richard and Elizabeth.
