I have a problem which I hope someone can answer re Allan/Alan NORTHEAST born 1870 in Eastergate. He was a seaman, so pops up in Portsmouth in 1911 as a Stoker in the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Sailors Home. His son Allan was apparently born in Grimsby in 1917, 6th September.-(given to me by his son, also Allan, who should know if he has the cert.) and died in 2009 aged 91 in Peacehaven. I have found a marriage for Allan aged 57 to an Eliza J Heffermen in 1927 in Grimsby aged 40 if the birth I have found for her in 1887 is correct. The only death on freebmd is for this Allan in 1945 aged 75 in Brighton. Now I want to know do you think he was away at sea for 10 years and only got married on his return when he found he had a son, or could Allan be the son of an earlier marriage/liason and how do I find out? many thanks for any help. As my husband is about to celebrate his 70th birthday - also 6 September! and we have already 8 family who have arrived with another 17 arriving over the next day and a half - I do not have time to do this, but you could look closely at births for Northeast and Hefferman in 1917. You could then try a marriage search for the single names on their own and see what comes up. (You should not find too many, both are fairly unusual surnames) Have you asked the son if he would be prepared to send you a phoocopy of the cert? Are we talking 3 generations all called Allan? if you can get hold of any RN history/pay records for him that might throw something up.I am not sure if the time limit is 75 or 100 years...
