Thank you Roger and Anne Again with previous help from the list, each of the three Richard and Elizabeth Smith had a son Richard. There is also another marriage for a Richard and Lucy Underdown at Wadhurst. Could this Richard be the son of Richard and Elizabeth Martin who married at Wadhurst? And could this son Richard be the one born 29 May 1799 at Wadhurst. The extracts I have from the Sussex Marriage Index state that Richard Smith, bach 25 hus Laughton married by licence 29 Sep 1787 Elizabeth Banks, sp 20 wcof Hny. labr West Firle Extra information SRS 26 ss: R.S.: John Mockett yeo West Firle Richard Smith, bach 29 bricklyr otsp married by licence 26 Jan 1791 Elizabeth Tipper, sp 21 West Dean Extra information SRS 35 ss: R.S.; Richd.S. tailor otsp Witness wit: Ann Philby: Jn Fenner; Jn. I know otp means 'of this parish' but can't work out what the others mean. My Richard who married Lucy Piper came to Australia in 1839 after Lucy died in 1837, which means I am unable to look up any census information. Would you know where or how I could access the actual registers and not just the indexes to see if any other information has been recorded? And how I wish there was someboby else reseaching this family! Or even the other families so I could rule them out! That would be too easy, wouldn't it?
