    1. [SXP] Henry HART/HAYDEN b. 1853
    2. june harvey
    3. My cousin and I have been searching for Henry for many years. He is believed to have started out in life as Henry HART b. 1853, Brighton, to Henry HART and Martha BROWN, with siblings Mary Ann HART and Martha HART. Next sighting 1861 at 48 Egremont Streeet, Brighton, with mother, now a widow, and sisters. Next sighting 1881 at 17 Egremont Street, with partner Martha C. HART (Wilkinson) and sons, Henry, George and Catherine. Next sighting 1891 at 48 Egremont Street with mother. Next sighting 1901 at 82 Carlisle Street, Brighton, now married to Ann, formerly DAVIE, nee BRUNDRETT, with daughter, louise, aged 4, and Ann's children, Alice and Millie DAVIE. Next sighting 1911 at 165 Elm Grove, Brighton, with wife Annie and Daughter Louise. Henry is a house painter throughout the censuses. Here's where it gets awkward; the children with him in the censuses were Henry James HAYDEN b. 1874, Oldham, Lancashire, George William HAYDEN, b. 1877 in Shoreditch, Catherine Rose HAYDEN b. 1879, Hampstead and Joseph HART b. 1881, Kemp Town, Brighton. All of these children were born to Henry HART or HAYDEN and Martha Caroline HART or HAYDEN nee WILKINSON, according to their various birth certificates. Martha Caroline WILKINSON married Robert LANGRIDGE in 1883 (children Catherine and Joseph living with them) and went on to have other children. There are other mysteries attached to this man, but this is enough for now. Why did Henry go to Lancashire and change his name and, upon his return to Brighton, change it back again. The only theory I can come up with is that the child, Joseph, was born in Brighton where his grandmother lived, presuming that Henry did not want his mother to know of the previous change of name. Joseph eventually changed his name to HAYDEN as he was married in Plaistow under the name HAYDEN. We are descended from the children bearing the name HAYDEN, but now wonder if we really are HARTs. On the other hand, is there a Henry HAYDEN that we just cannot find! June and Julie

    3. In case others are working on an answer to this post, I've gone off line to send Jenni an attachment. The parents of Walter Barrow b1887 at Cuckfield are Spencer Barrow and Elizabeth Christian who married Mar 1870 at Battle. The paternal tree from Spencer Barrow is on Ancestry although they haven't gone as far as listing Walter or all of his siblings. The maternal tree is on http://www.petex.org.uk/pedigree.php?personID=I1189&tree=chr. But, as this is predominantly a tree for the Christian surname, once again only half the tree has been done. There's been no effort to trace Walter's paternal lines or spouses and descendants of Walter and his siblings. Put both halves together, and you get the start of a reasonable tree. Peter in Sydney

    3. Jenni, I never know how to answer questions like this. Obviously I don't have any connections. They might be found on submitted trees on Ancestry and a variety of other sites. Sometimes even Googling selected names bring surprise results. But the question is ... "Are they accurate?" As for information, you should be readily able to get back to early 1800's using census records, FreeBMD and Family Search. FreeBMD will also get you descendants up to about 1937. Later records are available via Ancestry or Find My Past. It's just a case of following the steps one at a time. And it's more fun when you find things for yourself. Peter

    1. [SXP] BARROW and MARSH in Sussex
    2. Jenni Gibson
    3. Hello listers, I have a research interest in Walter BARROW born 1887 in Cuckfield, Sussex and Lilian Edith MARSH born ca 1882 in Wimbledon, Surrey. According to the 1911 census, Walter and Lilian married in 1910. Walter was then a police constable (East Sussex constabulary) and their address was 1 Fairfield Road St Johns Terrace Burgess Hill Sussex. At the time, they had no children. Lilian Edith MARSH was one of two children of Annie Jane EASTWOOD (1858-1932) and her first husband Frederick George MARSH (1858-1887). After Frederick's death, Annie Jane married Charles MOSELEY (born ca 1858 in Guisborough, Yorkshire), and they had a son Lionel Charles MOSELEY born 1892 in Chislehurst, Kent. Is there anyone out there with connections to, or information regarding Walter BARROW and Lilian Marsh. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Jenni Gibson (Melbourne, Australia)

    1. Re: [SXP] Jacobs family
    2. Peter R Booth
    3. Christina, I think the town you want is BILDESTON. It looks like one of those names that has a dozen variants and is always being mistranscribed. Try searching 1841 or 1851 census of Suffolk using BILD* to see some of the varieties. It also looks like a parish with sporadic IGI records. The Archer Software site shows a whole host of small broken batches again with various spellings. You might be better directing your question to the Suffolk List that might have a better idea of the area The best I could find was a 1795 marriage for John Jacobs and Anne Keeble in Bildeston, But I can't find any christenings for children. Using only the Jacobs surname and Suffolk, 1841 census only has one or two occurrences of John and Ann*. None are in Bildeston, so you might check other nearby locations. But my guess is that they have died. Perhaps somebody can check National Burial Index. Peter

    3. Christina, If you've been unable to find them, my guess is that they have probably died. Based on son Jonathan being born 1799, they be born before 1780, so be at least 60 by 1841 census. Have you looked for their marriage or any other children? Google "Hugh Wallis" or "Archer Software" and check IGI batches for Bilderstoke. I'd also check Jonathan's age. 39 seems a bit old for marriage in those times. Perhaps the easiest was would be to purchase Jonathan's marriage certificate from GRO for 9.50 pds. It should show if father is still living, and if Jonathan was previously married There may also be clues in the witnesses. Peter

    3. Judith, The quickest and simplest solution would be to buy the 1927 marriage certificate, which would give her age and father's name. Peter

    3. I am slightly confused as to what you are asking: if you have her maiden and married names and the dates of marriage and death, then you HAVE her surnames? Are you looking for the birth of a Violet Dixon? On Find my past there are 5 in Yorks - none from Harrogate but there is one in Knaresborough in 1895, 4th quarter Also Rotherham 1894 1st qu Violet May Dixon Sculcoates 1895 4th qu Violet Montrose D Middlesborough 1896 1 qu Another in Sculcoates 1896 2 qu Yet another in Sculcoates 1892 2 qu Take your pick! Which are you more sure about - the date or the place? Knaresborough and Harrogate are close in geog and type.... 1. [SXP] People born to Canadian soldiers in Brighton Sussex area 1942
    2. Katie de Haan
    3. Hello Sussex list I've signed up for one query related to my family history. I'm looking for people born in the Brighton SUSSEX area in 1942 who think their father may have been a Canadian soldier by the name of Walter. I have reason to believe my father had a child born in a Brighton hospital and registered there some time in 1942. If there's anyone on or off this list who knows of any such births, I sincerely hope they will get in touch with me so that we can compare notes and take whatever other measures may be necessary to establish whether we have a connection. Thank you, Katie de Haan The Netherlands

    3. HI Pam,   The Oxford Names Companion has Diggins and Dickens etc as variations of Dick.   The Sussex Marriage Index has a handful of marriages for a John Diggins etc between 1600 and 1700 but the only one in Eastbourne was:-   John Dickens married Mary Russell 11th November 1630. The date seems about right for your couple.   Best wishes,   Robin ________________________________ From: PMR <cliveden@iinet.net.au> To: SSX-PLUS - Mailing List <SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Cc: SFHG Mailing List <sfhg@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, 6 June 2013, 23:51 Subject: [SXP] Goody DIGGINS Greetings Listers             One of my ancestors is named, in her burial entry in Eastbourne in 1700, as Goody DIGGINS. 3. Diggins is certainly a name you do not hear every day, but I have a Samuel Diggins marrying a Sarah Harris in 1767. From my research of this line they were in the Frensham Surrey & Headley Hampshire areas. Whilst not a fit with your line, worth a mention?
