    3. dear list, I have ancestors in the first subsidies of the rapes of Lewes and Bramber; (late 13th and early 14th centuries.) Can someone say: are "rapes" co-terminus with "Baronies" ? I know there was a Rape and as well a Barony and Honor of Lewes; was there also one of Bramber? Do these two rapes abut or were my ancestors so annoying as to "skip" over a rape or a barony ? And can anyone say where would would look for the property rolls of these rapes or baronies? Thank you. Rod Blaker

    3. Rod - I had a look in the Dictionary of Genealogy, and it says a rape is a subdivision of the county of Sussex. Doesn't mention the other counties, so it must be peculiar to Sussex. You can Google Rape of Sussex and learn more. In 1832, there were six Rapes: Hastings, Pevensey, Lewes, Bramber, Arundel, and Chichester. 1. [SXP] William GOACHER, b 1854, Brighton
    2. Connie
    3. Hallo I'm trying to find out whether William GOACHER married twice and if so whether it was to an Ellen both times. There's a possible marriage in the Sept qtr of 1874 to an Ellen RICHARDSON in St Geo H Sq reg district in London. There is a Sarah E RICHARDSON lodging with William in Hove in the 1881 census who /may/ be Ellen's mother. There's another marriage for a William GOACHER in the the June qtr of 1894 in Horsham reg district. An Ellen STREETER also married in the same qtr and district and death of an Ellen (age 42) in the March qtr of 1897 in the same reg district. The age given matches with that given in the censuses. It's crossed my mind that William married Ellen RICHARDSON in London, she became ill and was in an asylum or hospital and he didn't wait for her to die before remarrying. I may be wrong but I would like to be sure. I know I could buy the certificates but that is costly and the GOACHERs are in laws of my 1C3R. I've tried FMP, FreeREG and FamilySearch. There's no OPC for Brighton or Horsham. -- Connie http://oursalmons.wordpress.com/

    3. I, too would like to see a copy of the grave markers in Bexhill. Are there 2 cemeteries in Bexhill? One at St. Peter's Church and another somewhere? I am most interested in any surname of PRIOR or PRYOR. I have extracted a few from the Parish Register. Any help for those of us across the ocean would be appreciated. 3. Hi Yvonne, If you found the original from the parish registers you could try the OPC for Falmer http://www.sussex-opc.org/index.php?cy=52&at=0&n=falmer&t=parish&a=&no=5&l=&b=index.php. They are generally very helpful people (the ones I have ever contacted have been great). hth, Anne > Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2013 09:48:03 +0100 > From: robin.coates1@btinternet.com > To: bazahome-cutts@powerup.com.au; SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [SXP] marriage > > Hi Yvonne, > > I have checked the Sussex Marriage Index, which is a CD > containing pretty well every Sussex marriage from c1537 to 1837. > and the first James Carpenter marriage shown doen't take place > until 1692.
